what codec is good for fast moving action like Thai boxing ?

I would like to convert my AVCHD clips to a much smaller format so I can upload on the net to show family members.

I am off to Thailand to train Thai boxing so the footage will be fast paced.

Try uploading a test to YouTube. They now have a "watch in high quality" feature which really isn't all that high-quality, but it's not bad. You also won't have to worry about your family needing to track down a player or codecs to view your compressed videos, or worry about the files being too large to send via email.
