Blue screen while playing / Import AE failure

Hi there!

I'm with this big problem, and I need to get it fixed asap. I've been looking around @ google and tons of forums the past few days, but keep getting the wrong results :(

I've got this DVD I need to edit, so I ripped it with DVDDecripter 3.5.4.0. When it was finished, I got these VOB files on my PC, which I converted to an .avi with AutoGK. When I tried to import that .avi in After Effects, my AE crashed. I updated my AE, but it didn't work. I've deleted the opengl file from my plugins folder, didn't work. I have the latest drivers for everything, so that's also not the problem.

Then I opened the .avi in virtualdub, and it said the audio was VBR, so I converted it into CBR and directly streamed it over the movie. Then I tried importing it again in AE, but still it crashes.

When I play the movie in any mediaplayer (VLC for example), I do notice a few strange things though. The video stays blue for a few seconds and then it suddenly shows the video and the sound. Then when I for example skip the video 30 minutes forwards, it stays blue for a loooooong time, and then the vid suddenly comes back again. The filesize isn't extraordinarely big though or anything, 650MB for a bit more than one hour. I do notice the video progressively loading over time, so when I skip back to even a part I have not been / skipped, but which has been loaded, the video starts immediately there (no blue screen).

Well, I surely hope I'll get an answer, cuz I really really really need to get this fixed asap.

I don't know After Effects but why on earth would you convert your DVD to a crappy 650MB avi before doing your editing? Also what kind of editing do you want to do?

Never said it was a full DVD movie, it's just a fullquality conversion. It's some home project we're working on atm, and I got this DVD with the vid actually put into the DVD, which wasn't what I wanted but I can't change it now, so I needed to convert it back to avi.

Well, first of all, that's not the point.

And 2nd of all, what I meant to say was that I'm not trying to rip like a copyrighted hollywood movie or smth. I got this DVD from my sister, who is working on a schoolproject, and I should be editing it. One of them retards at her school though burned it as a movie on the DVD, so I had to rip it. Hope it's more clear to u now, and now plz get back to the actual problem :/

So you need normally working xvid in avi? Seems that you encoded your video in a not good manner.
Download and install latest virtualdub. Then download and install either MPEG-2 plugin by fccHandler (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/MPEG2/index.html) or VirtualDub Plugins Pack (http://www.virtualdub-fr.org/telechargement).
Then open in virtualdub VOBs you need. Encode to xvid with preferred properties. Hope that helps.

By the way, why do you need to convert to AVI? Is AE not supporting VOB/MPG?
