View Full Version : Subtitling - Is this possible?

Hi all,

I just spent a good hour or two on the forum, the Doom9 page (and the Google search toolbar), trying to figure something out.

Now, so far, from what I can see all the guides here are basically DVD2SVCD or subtitling an SVCD (or some other video format, DiVX, etc.).

I've started collecting the R2 releases of various anime DVDs. Now, I know you can use DVDSubber to play the DVD while displaying an imported SSA script file.

My question is, is it possible to rip the DVD and re-burn it onto a DVD with a new subtitle stream say, from an SSA script? Or, considering I also own some of the R1 releases of the R2 release, is it possible to rip the subtitle stream from the R1 release and simply mux it into the R2 release and burn that? I know you can rip the subs into BMP format but it's the re-encoding that I have a problem with. :D

Also, what kind of DVD burner and media would I need? (For those who are curious, I ordered the R2 LE/DTS version of the AMG movie right after I got the R1 release and I'd rather watch the DTS DVD with English subs if possible.)

Thanks a much!!

Yes, infact it's very easy to do. I've been subtitling my R2 Patlabor DVD set - the basic process is this:

-Rip DVD to HD with SmartRipper
-Demux VOB to M2V video and AC3 audio using Vobrator
-Fire up your favorite authoring software that supports subtitles (Maestro or Scenerist)
-Import M2V and AC3 files into project and put them into a movie set.
-Convert .SSA script to .SON subtitle file with MaestroSBT (works with Maestro or Scenerist).
-Insert audio track
-Set up menus, and burn!

I use a Pioneer A03, works like a charm. I use standard Apple DVD media (cheap and easy to get).

Oh damn. I still have to set up the menus and everything on my own? Yowza.

Hmm. Let me read up on the guide again as to why I can't just copy the menus. Thanks! :D

Well, nothing like posting a follow-up to one's own posts but it seems to me that going over things once more, you can make a copy of DVD with the menus intact (doh...).. So, that being said, time for another question:

Why can't I simply remux the the subtitle? I'm especially looking at the stream processing tab on SmartRipper and if I could rip a new vob with only the subtitle stream, surely there's a -very easy- way of remuxing it into the video? (I know my original question was about using an SSA or some other external script...)

HEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!! :D
