XviD 1.2.0 x64 vs XviD 1.2.1 and Windows Media Center

I installed the compiled 1.2.0 x64 XviD codec from XviDvideo.ru and to my surprise I was for the first time ever able to view XviD videos in Windows Media Center under Vista x64. When I uninstalled and then installed Koepi's compiled 1.2.1 XviD codec I went back to not being able to play XviD files in Windows Media Center.

I'll state quite simply that I am completely stupid in this department. Can someone explain to me in a logical manner why the XviDvideo.ru version allowed playback while Koepi's doesn't. I've found no such information on this so it wasn't a lack of trying. I just can't seem to locate anything that helps me understand and being able to playback these files in Windows Media Center was an enormous plus.

Koepi's build is 32-bit, not 64-bit.

You should be able to have a x64 build (xvidvideo.ru's) and a regular 32-bit (Koepi's) installed at the same time. So just reinstall the x64 build.

Thank you both for the answers. Unfortunately, xvidvideo.ru has been inaccessible for the last two days and it seems no one else has compiled an x64 Windows release that I can locate. It's unfortunate that Koepi doesn't compile x64 releases. Were I able to do so I would just compile the source, myself.

I did, of course, know that Koepi's release only 32-bit. I just wasn't aware that this, in itself, could result in the inability to play XviD files in Media Center or that an x64 release was all that was needed to resolve the problem under Vista x64.

The problem stems from the fact that the Windows Media Center is a 64 bit application and will not work in WOW64 mode, hence you need 64 bit codecs, but the movies itself are encoded using the 32 bit codec so you do require the 32 bit to play it back, that the main reason for my not being able to play videos in WMC, Im not a big fan of FFDShow(too many options) but you can use it, it will allow you to play XviD videos in WMC

Whether a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the codec was used for encoding has nothing to do with it.

Playing it in Windows Media Center is!, it cannot use 32 bit Xvid / DivX, try it

but the movies itself are encoded using the 32 bit codec so you do require the 32 bit to play it backI'll say it again: it does not matter which version of the codec is used to encode the video. You can encode the same file using both 64-bit and 32-bit codecs and the output files should be exactly the same, any MPEG4 ASP decoder should be able to decode them.
