I am very new in encoding, recently start to encode 7-8 gb mkv movies to fit DVD5 disc.
While doing this I notice that, gui programs are just changing the bitrate (almost to the half to fit the movie to 4 gb), but keeping the resolution same, ıf the original is 1200x600, encoded one is 1200x600 too.
For the quality, is resolution or bitrate more important? While encoding, if I change the resolution, will the bitrate of final movie be improved?
and over the net, someone was suggesting a calculation like:
bitrate / (frame rate x width x height) and arranging bitrate and resolution so that this ratio is close to 0,20 .
for ex: for 500kb bitrate and 500x250 resolution of 25 fps. this ratio is
500000/ (25x500x250) = 0,16
is the ratio 0,20 as a rule of thumb is rational ??
I am sorry if these questions are silly, but am new and just trying to understand basics. Thanks
