Have been backing up my dvd's for quite some time and have always suceeded until now. Got my daughter a dvd the other day with special features included; "Spongebob goes prehistoric" which not only has the movies but also under special features it has games that have to played on the computer. Some of the files are the usual IFO, VOB, BUP for the DVD portion but then also has AUTORUN, INF; Disc, ID;
INSTALL, for the Interactual player, EXE; ReadME, TXT and WINrar files. Using DVDFab 5 and I tried using Imgburn in the build mode for the full disc and checked to include "Non Video Files" also. 1st shot thought that they were all included by importing the folders and files to img burn and burning to iso. Output of 6.2GB appeared to be correct but after burning iso to DL dvd it won't play in the standalone player nor will it open on pc as is missing lang. file or folder. Have since tried other combinations of imported files and folders to img burn but have been unsuccessful. Nero would not touch it because of the "other" files and ri4m wouldn't handle also. Easy DVDShrink wanted upgrade to handle the raw input.
For now have burnt the main movie only to iso and then to dvd for daughter.
Would like to go to the next level by being able to do the full dvd, using free programs whereever possible.:thanks:

Have you tried ripping in full iso mode? You may only need DVD Decrypter to do this, but I am unsure as I do not know the protection scheme used.

Ripping and burning in full iso mode should allow for a perfect 1:1 copy, with special features intact.

I'd be making a working ISO of the DVD (verify with standalone player) then injecting the "extra" files with something like PowerISO (unfortunetly there are no good free image programs, that i know of anyway) then trying your modified ISO in the standalone player.

@cwl7454

Hi!Nero would not touch it because of the "other" filesSounds like you're trying to place the "Other" files into NERO Burning ROM's red "VIDEO_TS" folder, instead of dragging and dropping them into the root directory of the disc you are trying to create (Which is where ALL files and/or folders, other than ".IFOs", ".BUPs", and ".VOBs" MUST be placed...

@setarip_old

The 1st step has to be to get it thru a decryptor program in order to be able to copy.

@dat720

yes late last night I did just the main movie using dvdfab 5 and image burn and it plays fine on the stand alone.

@Merlin7777

no I did not try dvd decryptor by itself, as I guess I expected that I would automatically have to go thru a newer decrypting program first.

With all the different formats and the failures so far I was thinking that I would have to place all the different format files into a folder one by one and do a mearge somehow if the program would show and let me import all of the different file types.

I will try decryptor tonight. Am in no rush, as I said would like to learn to be able to do this. I guess, learning process like the BR.

Since you already have DVDFab, try the clone feature.

The 1st step has to be to get it thru a decryptor program in order to be able to copy.Were you trying to use NERO to decrypt the DVD? If so, be advised that nothing in the NERO suite is a decrypter. This has nothing to do with the "Other" files...

@Merlin7777

I used dvd decryptor in the iso read mode and came up with a iso image of 6,366,144kb and a MDS file of 9kb.

When I right clicked on the 6gb iso and told it to open, it opened automatically with Nero burning rom. Info says that it is 1 track, data (mode 1) 6,217MB (6,366,144kb). The MDS is linked to the iso, but some where along the line I got the impession it was for the layer break, is this correct?

Before I attempt another DL is there a way to see what files and formats are on the image vs what is on the original?

@setarip old

NO original try from get go was 1st ri4m, failed then went to dvdfab5 and was able to get an iso using build mode then tried to burn with nero 8 but unable to burn because of the different file formats so went to image burn and burnt to DL but unable to play.

@dialysis1

availible on the platnum additon not the free. Possibly consider purchase as last resort, sure there must be a way to do it for free. Don't get me wrong I have no problem spending money but when it comes to software most free programs is as good and some better.

Try burning with DVD Decrypter instead of Nero, just make sure you load the .mds file instead of the ISO.

Folder - win
Folder - Game
Folder - Directx9

According to the cover one of the requirements is that you be able to be connected to the internet. My daughters computer is not, while it played on hers it had no audio, On mine everything was good.

An ISO rip should work for you. Open your ISO in ISOBuster or mount it in Daemon Tools and see what's there.

The MDS is layer break info for the burn. Just feed the MDS to ImgBurn and you'll be right.

Thanks guys,

Good news and some unexplained news.

DVD Decryptor to iso > iso to imgburn using MDS.

Standalone player in living room, Panasonic, new last year will not play this type disc. Had problems with previous +DL and in checking found out that it would not play +DL so reburnt to -DL and played fine. However this Memorex -DL will not play in it, must not like Memorex.
The Helios in the porch will play it but goes straight to the movie.
The Panasonic in daughters room, TV w/ built in dvd, will play it fine and does go thru all the hoops, the warnings and the main menu selections etc.
left it her room for tonight, will check it tomarrow for the games on the computers and post the results.

Only use Verbatim, +R, 2.4x, MKM-001-00, Made in Singapore. The memorex are rubbish.

Tried on daughters computer; game plays fine with audio, movie plays but no audio.

On my computer everything is fine.

No problem tho because as soon as I get done bulding my new one she gets this one with most of the programs that are installed including xp pro.
Going 64 all the way this time.

@blutach

haven't had a need for DL so picked up what was availible, will order verbatim and see if it makes a difference. Panasonic standalone says that it needs -R.

Thanks again, glad that I'm a packrat on these programs.

Thats most likely a codec issue, the audio track could be AC3 or DTS and your daughters PC hasn't got a filter for that, work out what the audio track is then install the appropriate filter.

In looking thru the manual that came with the panasonic stand alone it says that it will play -DL recorded from a dvd video recorder but not from a personal computer, on +DL it says that it can be played from a format different from a dvd video recorder format but some functions cannot be used. I haven't had any luck getting +DL to play on it tho.

How does it know the difference?

Thought that maybe could convert to another format but it says that it will not play DL wma,mp3,jpeg,mpeg4, Divx.
Guess time to look for a different stand alone, might as well go for a bluray.

on +DL it says that it can be played from a format different from a dvd video recorder format but some functions cannot be usedThis probably means it can play normal DVD Video format only. On this basis, I think it will play +Rs - anyway, go get one and see. But make sure you get quality - Verbatim, +R, 2.4x, MKM-001-00, Made in Singapore are the only reliable ones.

To increase compatibility, make sure you burn with the booktype set to DVDROM (can only be done on a +R). This makes the disc look as much like a normal DVD Video as possible.

@blutach

Had no need to change book types before so took me awhile to find where to change it at. Going to order a 20 pack verbatim +R DL tomarrow and will let you know the results on the standalone after new burn on the verbatim and book type change.

Question: When I get ready to burn in imgburn I get a warning about the layer break and after the 100% completion it goes on sycronize for a while, Is it calculating and holding back some of the data in order to place the layer break at the correct placement and then when syncronizing, actually writing the second layer?

after the 100% completion it goes on sycronize for a while, Is it calculating and holding back some of the data in order to place the layer break at the correct placement and then when syncronizing, actually writing the second layer?No, it's performing what's known as a "lead out" - a standard procedure (along with "calibration" and "lead in") performed by all DVD burning programs for all burnable media...

Sync shouldn't take that long. Finalisation can take a bit of time depending on the structure of the files on the disc.

After it goes thru it's writing from 0 to 100% the bar stays at 100% and in the bottom left hand corner it starts going thru sync from 0 to 100%. Have walked away while it was doing it and haven't payed attention to see if it then goes into lead out after reaching the 100% mark. Because it was taking 3 or 4 minutes I thought that it was then writing the second layer. Will pay attention to it the next time I do a verbatim DL.

cwl7454

Did verify, img burn goes thru the normal write process from 0 to 100% on the "complete" progress bar, while it stays at 100%; in the bottom left corner it starts at o% "synchronising cache" and goes to 100%. This took 11 minutes on the last one. There is no switch to " lead out " writing, at 100% posts operation successful window.

Did burn in DVD rom, -R DL, partial success; loaded on standalone and started to play but at chapter 2 -1 froze and wouldn't go any further. thought that I would try it while awaiting the +R DL. trial and error so I know.

The non-appearance of the phrase "lead out" (Used by NERO) when using IMGBurn appears to be simply a matter of semantics, as described by the IMGBurn author in the following post at another forum:

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=2954&view=findpost&p=34429

cwl7454

yes you are correct; I watched the burn in imgburn and a burn in nero and what imgburn is calling sync cache is lead out in nero. So at least that is now known and clarified.
I had looked thru the imgburn help file and could find nothing on it.
