Hi Everyone,

I recently made the following post to a Windows forum.....

"I decided to try and update the firmware in my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A external USB drive . I want to update to JY08 , from JYC4 . Sony says I must disable DMA for my external SONY DVD RW DRU-720A , before I can flash the new firmware. But how can I tell which IDE channel , in device
manager controls my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A ? I also have both a internal CD-RW drive , and a internal DVD-Rom drive . And a external USB Seagate hard drive . And my controllers are IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers .
I will very much appreciate someone telling how to "sort out" which DMA setting goes to my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A . "

And this is the answer I received ..........

" IDE channels are only internal hard drive connections. USB drives do not have the IDE setting for DMA."

It looks my knowledge of DMA uses is very limited . Especially as DMA relates to DVD-RW drives . And I'm looking for answers to how I can safely , temporary disable DMA for my SONY DVD RW DRU-720A , so I can update the firmware .
I've read that improper firmware updates can destroy a DVD drive. And that if a DMA setting is changed to PIO , then Windows may not be able to turn DMA back on.
So any feedback will be appreciated .

Also I'm attaching a firmware update PDF from Sony . It said to go to "Help and Support" for info on disabling DMA , but a search for the topic came back with no useful info.

There is nothing to disable for your external drive. Just make sure that there is no disc inside the drive when you flash it.
