Batch Ripping of TV DVD's

Recently I wrote a program that's a 'wrapper' for dvd decrypter, to allow batch ripping of multiple vts's and pgc's from a dvd. In the hopes that it will help others, I released it on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/tvripper/

I'm currently looking for more ideas to expand the usability of the program, if anyone has any good ideas let me know.

"Wrapping" around a more current ripping/decrypting program would likely be more beneficial.

BTW - Did you seek the author's (or the current "owner's") permission to use the program in your "wrapper"?

DVD Decrypter is not included in the release. You must locate the program yourself, therefore I did not request permission from the author for the same reason I didn't request permission from Microsoft to write software for windows. :)

As far as more current programs go, I have not found any that were any better than dvd decrypter, and dvd decrypter is still listed as the 'best' in the FAQ in the forums.

For probably 99% of TV show DVDs, DVD Decrypter is still the easiest way to go since it's the only one (afaik) that lists the individual episodes by their PGC, can rip them into a single VOB, and requires only one step from DVD to hard drive.

I like this program and i think it is useful. But the first Disc i tried had 8 Episodes in single VTS´s. So maybe there should be an option to enter more than 5 Episodes. Keep up the good work!

Ok, I've replaced the 5 VTS setup with a rip queue, you can add any combination / amount of episodes you need to the queue (up to 100 episodes total from 1 disc) and uploaded version 1.1.0.0 to sourceforge.

...this time it is simple. No "Episode per VTS" like we had it with "Sledge Hammer". I am backing up my "Battlestar Galactica" DVD´s. All the episodes are in a single VTS. But once i entered "VTS 02 / PGC 1-4) and i click on "Begin Ripping!" – nothing happens. If i then click on "Add to queue" first, tvripper will crash with an unhandled exception.

When i click on "Add to queue" before i click on "Begin Ripping!" everything works fine. I can live with it but maybe you wanna fix it!

And thanks for all the effort you have put into this program so far! It rips the episodes just as i need them!

Sadly ... I ran into the same problem tonight. I'll add something in to make sure it checks the queue before you begin ripping.

Fixed in version 1.1.0.1 and uploaded to sourceforge.

OK, Chapter information is stored in the IFO which is deleted when the files are renamed and moved to their proper directories.

I'll add something in to keep the IFO if you want to keep the chaptering information.

Added in version 1.1.0.2. I also fixed the tab order, and moved the buttons down so that it was less confusing while ripping (you need to enter a vts / pgc / start episode ... then add to queue before hitting begin ripping.)

Thankyou very much sparkie. The chapter info was just a nice little extra I noticed when switching over to using handbrake. Could have easily lived without it. Greatly appreciate you adding a remedy so quickly. Kudos to you. Glad I found your program.

Win7 x64 - Unhandled exception whenever I click on the Open DVD Decrypter button.

Tried copying DVDDC to the Program Files dir as it sits in Program Files (x86) on a 64bit Windows but same problem.

Unfortunately doesnt work then. I only found this whilst looking for the old batch files I used a couple of years ago that did work ;)

`EDIT: Although it had automatically found DVD-DC it hadnt really... Just clicked on Find DVD DC and pathed it and it then works ... not very clever but it works

Are you running the latest version from sourceforge? I don't have any problems using multiple vts's

I just tried it with multiple VTS's and it works fine. You have to manually enter each VTS and From/To PGC into the queue.
For example:
VTS: 1 From PGC: 1 to PGC: 2 <add to rip queue>
VTS: 2 From PGC: 1 to PGC: 2 <add to rip queue>
Begin Ripping!

It will then rip VTS1/PGC1, then VTS1/PGC2, then VTS2/PGC1, then VTS2/PGC2

1) Would be nice to have a VTS rip mode so i dont need to keep entering VTS x, From PGC1 To PCG1
2) I notice it rips the IFO and VOB and then renames the single VOB to the episode name which I initially thought was great until I loaded the result in WMP. A 40.xx minute episode shows as 25 minutes. So I suspect many tools like AutoGK will calculate bitrates incorrectly. Is that what the preserve IFO option is for? Can't check the Help text since I am now re-ripping the DVD again.

Yes, preserve IFO keeps the IFO intact rather than deleting it.

As far as AutoGK goes, this is exactly why I made this. I built a home storage server to store 20TB of data. Then I proceeded to rip every last TV DVD I had, and it was getting ridiculously difficult with the batch files that were out there (And they didn't keep the VOB files in a format that was easily renamed with natbur's tv renamer). So I made this. I expanded it based on feedback, so if you expand on what you want, I'll add the functionality in, as it's a relatively simple/dumb program.

I even added a 'help' section so if you click on help, you'll get a little explanation as to what each field is / does.

Have to admit I looked and saw how it renamed IFOs and was concerned but this works very well with AutoGK.

Only 44 episodes of The Outer Limits to rip now ;)

"No Title(s) found.

Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which Handbrake does not support."

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to change any settings within DVD Decrypter? I had a fresh install of it and had not changed any settings.

Nothing replaces the handwork. Automatic solutions may fail, as there are 2 major types of mastering the series on DVD, and DvdDecrypter can not rip all the actual titles anymore.

No worries. I realized it's easiest to simply rip the entire DVD and load it into Handbrake. It does a great job of detecting the individual episodes which can be selected by a drop-down box.
