View Full Version : Personal DVD-A ripping : PCM files?

Okay, first of all, it should be clear I'm not talking about anything pirated, those usually are already re-encoded in FLAC. Not that I know anything about that, of course.

I'm ripping my own Audio DVD (Sting's Brand New Day... don't laugh) using DVD-Audio Explorer Alpha 12. My earlier attempt (Linkin Park's Re:Animation .... once again try not to laugh) gave me .mlp files, but the ripping app also had the option for wav output, which Foobar promptly turned into AC3 easily (mostly for listening on my current audio setup, which doesn't support raw 5.1 audio). I figure eventually FFMPEG will support reading MLP, so I can store those files while listening to the AC3 in the meanwhile. The reason I don't re-encode the wav's to FLAC (instead of storing the MLP files) is because I'm not sure how good the decoder (which I think is based on the FFMPEG SOC code) is for MLP in the extraction app, e.g. if it has any bugs.

However, for the Sting disc, I got .pcm files, which I assume means they're uncompressed. However, I have no clue which app can play this container if there even exists one. Should I just extract to WAV? And does anyone know how safe Alpha 12 is for converting MLP to WAV?

Any info'd be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I would assume .pcm means PCM WAV files - try changing the extension to .wav and see if they'll play in the ol' Windows Sound Recorder utility.

First thing I tried; no luck. Maybe it has a different header?

Hi!

Perhaps something in the following loooong thread will provide you with some helpful information:

You need to convert the lpcm files to something else in order to play them. See: http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/DVDAGuide.

Just a thought....

We now have hardware players that support playback of multi-channel WAV audio by passing the PCM stream via HDMI to a suitably equipped surround sound amplifier.

Does anybody have any short samples of DVD-A audio backed-up to 6Ch WAV for me to try?

By-the-way, I'm not laughing as I also have Sting's Brand New Day. It's in 6Ch DTS though ;)
