The older DVDFab HD Decrypter v.4120 readily and correctly processes the R1 version of the new Disney release "WALL-E".

Disney is now using "XProtect" or similar copy protection, messing with the directory entries, among other things...

Yeah, the disc is lovely. The movie is Title 30, I believe, and most of the titles, if not all, preceeding that title are garbage. AnyDVD also handles this disc.

Hi!

My reference to an April date is regarding the date of issue of the ripping program I used (DVDFab HD Decrypter v.4120), not the DVD "WALL-E"...

Oh dear.

This has gone way OT. setarip_old merely reported in post 1 that DVDFD (old version) managed to rip WALL-E and that Disney has increased/amended its copy protection. Now that seemingly innocuous announcement has plummeted into a debate between program fanboys and somehow has devolved into a debate about the merits of updating a program or whether to turn on or off the scanner (which is clearly not Artificial Intelligence but a nice way of describing the exploration of the DVD). None of this has anything to do with the topic people!

Now, back on topic please and no more fighting between program fanboys.

UPDATE:

I had previously stated:BTW - You'll notice that, regarding "WALL-E", I was not able to report successful ripping by what IS my favorite (payware) one-click program, DVD95Copy Pro - because the most recent version (and all previous versions, as well) can't successfully rip it. So, just like AnyDVD was apparently "hardwire"modified, I guess DVD95CopyPro will need another "plugin" (which obviously has nothing to do with adaptable, self-changing, Artificial Intelligence) to deal with this latest version of Disney's copy protection. Please note that the very recently released DVD95Copy v.3.9.167 can properly process the R1 version of "WALL-E".

Also, rather remarkably, if you have at least 60Gb of hard drive space (for INITIAL work by the program) and plenty of time, the November/December 2006 RipIt4Me v. 1.6.4 can also properly process the R1 version of "WALL-E"!

60GB is a phenomenal amount of temporary data.

How long do you mean by plenty of time?

@Wombler

Hi!60GB is a phenomenal amount of temporary data. That's why I mentioned it ;>} (The DVD's directory contains file listings totaling 60GB. While current programs such as DVD95Copy and DVDFabHD Decrypter apparently avoid ripping and then eliminating the multiple filesets, the very old RipIt4Me v.1.6.4 first rips all of the filesets and then, during "Step 3B", eliminates the 10 unneeded filesets, hence requiring the 60Gb of hard drive space)
How long do you mean by plenty of time?Several hours.

Obviously, the two year-old RipIt4Me is not the ideal program for ripping a DVD with this newest copy protection scheme - but I thought it was interesting to note that it was capable of successfully (eventually) generating a proper rip of this DVD...

LOL. It's good to see that R4M can still handle this crazy stuff. 60 gigs. ROFL! :) But, it says a lot that it gets the job done eventually. It really is an impressive piece of code. Good to see that your favorite DVD95Copy has added support for this new protection, as well. It's nice when the software producers get things fixed quickly for their users. Yes, I agree, it'd probably better if updates weren't necessary, but, the studios just keep on trying with these crazy protection schemes. As long as the software producers keep up, then users can make their backups as they should.

As a sidenote, I was surprised/befuddled to see that in Explorer, the loaded DVD is indicated to have a total size of 7.30GB, yet if you then "Open" the disc in the drive, the "VIDEO_TS" folder is indicated to have total contents of 59.9GB. Vague recollections of UDF versus ISO came to mind.

Anyone have any specific knowledge regarding this apparently anomalous behavior?

SamuriHL
23rd November 2008, 17:40
It sounds similar to XProtect or FluxDVD protections but if R4M can deal with it then it's not exactly the same. Somehow they've managed to corrupt the file system. You could be right about the ISO vs UDF thing. Definitely not a fun protection whatever it is. Usually Disney tends to use RipGuard so I'm wondering if this is some new macrovision thing perhaps?

The simple old way to rip such crappy new DVDs is:
Use ISOBuster in combination with (an old) AnyDVD and copy your 8 GB DVD to hard disk, the fault sectors including.

Then start PgcEdit to indicate and clear the unused and fault sectors. Repair your DVD. No updates no AI and other tools needed.

And... this procedure works with every new protection.
Because standard DVD players must be able to play a DVD (interpreting PGC) by using UDF.

@frank

Hi!

1) Have you successfully used your described procedures on this SPECIFIC DVD (R1 "WALL_E" - or any other Region version tha has the identical copy protection scheme)?

2) Your "simple old way" appears to be less "simple" than using one of the "one-click" methodologies (used by the "masses") discussed here.

3) If you're a registered owner of AnyDVD, there's no reason to use "an old" version of it - and by using the current version (based on postings by others to this thread), it would seem there's no need to use ISOBuster and PgcEdit with it

I tell you what... I'm going to try it even though all of my experience with the program has led me to believe it to be a very limited program that produces a "joggy" at best video stream... just for you! Why you ask, well I have a new computer (4x the cores, two times the ram) everything is freshly installed (again) and I've had tons of success messing with the Flags (honor, ignore, forced film etc) (which is the answer to my other posts) and this is the first one that it hasn't worked on. But, since you are so sold on this program, if I get the output that I expect, and not what you are telling me it SHOULD produce then I expect you to never repond again with "MPEGMediator." Otherwise, I will gladly put my foot in my mouth and appologize on the forum. Deal?
@nitricptro

Your last post is simply inflammatory. This is needless.

Interesting indeed albeit more of a curiosity than anything given the long time required.

RipIt4Me is still my favourite ripper although more frequently now I'm having to use DVDFab HD Decrypter for the odd few discs.

It's quite a tribute to that program though how long it's kept going without any development.

From what I've seen posted elsewhere (Apparently, some people have early access to new releases), I guess the next release to test all of the rippers on will also be a Disney product - "Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian", scheduled for release on December 2nd. Some of my grandchildren saw it in the theater and can't wait for the DVD release. They're hoping for good "extra features"...

You don't get some duplication at 1:14? In that scene the book is opened twice here. Might be a DGIndex problem though. I did use DVDFab HD Decrypter v.4120 to rip the WALL-E dvd. Audio is nicely in sync but there.

I have no duplication that I know of, at 1 minute 14 seconds, 1 hour and 14 minutes, or anywhere else on my backup of "WALL-E".

Sorry for not being specific enough. And oops... Just realizing that I ripped an R2 DVD. So that's quite different then.

For what it's worth. It's at 1:14:47 (1 hour 14 minutes and 47 seconds) where in my rip the book with a picture of a plant in it is picked up and opened twice. In your rip that should be at about 1:17:54.

Make sure you're ripping with PUOs still on (especially angle change). Even though an angle should be defined in the commands.

The double scenes are indeed an angle 1/angle 2 problem. I see scenes with english text followed by scenes with dutch text.

I've ripped it now with various PUO settings in DVDFab HD Decrypter, also in the newest version 5.1.1.0, but I can't seem to get it right. I keep getting duplicate scenes. :stupid:

Edit: PgcEdit tells me that DVDFab Decrypter just doesn't get the angle information right.

Try the latest version of DVDFab HD Decrypter (5.1.2.0).

It's not clear exactly what the changes are but there are several items in the changelog relating specifically to problems with this particular movie.

I'm not into multiangle/ILVU stuff, but del_angles.exe from the VobBlanker package did not help (I was getting duplicate scenes all ovet the movie). Finally, to eliminate the angles/ILVU cells I used DVDShrink in reauthor mode (selected angle 2 title), then replaced the main title with the one produced by DVDShrink using VobBlanker.

blutach

Do not eliminate PUOps on the rip. Or if you do, insert the angle change PUO again with PgcEdit on the title. Do this by double clicking on the movie title, and click on the PUO box in the top left. Make sure the 3rd last PUO is ticked. OK and save.

I don't want to reauthor the DVD but it appears that I might have to. :(

blutach
29th November 2008, 00:06
Just make sure the angle change PUO is on (it's better if it's on in the VOBs as well as the IFOs, for some reason). And what are you playing it back on? Something that honours angles or a previewer that just plays ILVUs all at once.

@blutach

PgcEdit shows the angle of most of the cells correctly, but on a few double cells the angle information isn't there. I guess I'll have to edit them out.

I'm new to VOB-editing, but I'm learning. ;)

I'm using DGIndex to access the VOB's. I want to recode them.

blutach
29th November 2008, 11:37
Gee, if the angle isn't there, the rip is bad. Edit them out by deleting the unwanted cell from the cell table.

As far as playback is concerned, DGIndex is not a player. See how it plays in Showtime, VLC or PowerDVD, for example.

Are you having this problem with a "Full disc" rip or a "movie-only" rip?

jmartinr
30th November 2008, 23:32
Fixed.

Editing the unwanted cells out did the trick. And once I knew how to do that it was timewise the best solution I think. Got it encoded correctly now. The 2 audio tracks are nicely in sync. Subtitles are not, but that's relatively easy to correct.

@ setarip_old

It was a movie-only rip

@jmartinr It was a movie-only rip And that's yet another reason we can't make a valid comparison, as I only make "Full DVD" backups.

I wonder if you would still have "angle problems" with your R2 disc, if you did a "Full DVD" backup, with nothing else checkmarked in the main window of DVDFab HD Decrypter v.4.120.

Would you, perhaps be willing to perform that experiment?

I got a bit fed up with it, after having made rips with 3 versions of DVDFab HD Decrypter and RipIt4Me with a few different settings. I gave 5.1.2.0 (the older version is on an other machine) a quick try, "Full DVD" while keeping the PUO's. Same problem.

The problem is quite consistent. I'll leave it at that.

Hi All,

I have this same problem with our DVD (not Blue-Ray) library versions of Hancock and Wall-E.
(First, thanks to blutach for keepin' things real / on-track.)

Next, can anyone be a bit more specific about a)whether Disney is using Xprotect, or just a similar a file-pointer spoofing technique , and b)which version(s) of AnyDVD will correctly handle DVDs with this type of protection.

My DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 / DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 certainly will NOT!

Just in case I am a complete mushroom and DVD DC should do it, point be back to a primer page where it explains how managing IFOs might help! --again, just in case...but I doubt.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know what Disney is using but DVD Fab 5 betas up untill latest 5.2.2.0 didn't appear to work on Disney, but can rip them now. But there is a catch; make iso appears to only work in their paid version; platinum or gold: and not in their free version. The only way I figured this out was using their paid levels on the 30 day trial and successfully doing Disney and the Dark Knight.
They were not upfront about this in my support emails to them, they would have me continue to beleive that I was doing something wrong.
