Nero Says it is an XVid problem.....

I burn Avi files to DVD's using Nero. It has that 'startsmart' thing is where I start and then it calls Nero Vision, so I guess it's Nero Vision is what I'm using.

Usually they burn okay. but recently I've begun to get a few fails and I try again and they burn the second time. I've thought it was one of my little children perhaps getting at my keyboard while the encode/burn was in progress.

But today there were no children around and it happened again, three times.

I tried to burn the same avi each time and each time it failed due to an unexpected error and wanted to send a report to microsoft.

Each time it failed in a different part of the task. First time at about one quarter, then two thirds, more or less and last time at about 9 tenths.

I was able to click for more information on the error report and I got told it was an Xvid error and I should download the latest Xvid and that might fix it. I did that. And installed it. And got that last error - the one that went to about 9 tenths.

I'll try using Xilisoft or whatever I can find but I'll probably just be wasting dvd disks.

Does anyone have any clues what the problem might be? Are there known issues with Nero? I've got a swag of other stuff running, too. Keylogger is a new one I didn't used to have. Are there issues with it?

Lastly - does anyone have advice regarding the best thing to use if Nero isn't really the best? I'm not doing any more than burning a single avi file.

But in the same vein, different project, I also use Nero for stringing together my little digital camera pics (not a video cam, just a little canon a520) and try to put transitions between the clips and cut and join a bit. If there's any advice as to what I should be using for that, instead of Nero, I'll listen to it.

If you're just burning existing files to a disk, Windows should be able to do that fine on its own.

Well, its clearly spyware. If you installed it intentionally to spy on people using your PC thats O.K. If you didn't install it then its A BAD THING.

I call that stuff DivorceWare. Cut back on the amount of crap running in any case. It may that none of it is causing the problem but if nothing else they take CPU cycles. If you don't need it running then shut it off.

What the heck are you keylogging yourself for anyway? Shut the vile thing off when its not needed.

The question here is not what percent Nero stalls out at. The question is, Was it actually burning a disk or was it converting or something else.

If its stalling during a conversion then its likely that the file you were converting was bad. If you downloaded it from the Net it very well be a corrupted file. Thats not Nero and may not be Xvid. There lots of bad encodings and worse reassembly of split files that are out there on the Net.

Be specific when asking for help with multi-step processes. What EXACTLY were you doing. What step failed. What happened, as in was there an error code or crash to desktop or a reboot.

If you're still getting a crash with XviD 1.2, you might want to capture the call stack/DMP file and report that over to the XviD peoples to see if they can fix the issue.

Otherwise, you might need to stop using XviD and perhaps use FFDShow Tryouts for the decoding there instead.
