iso playback

May be a dumb question but here goes. If i rip a movie to an .iso and then burn the image to a blank dvd will it play like a normal dvd would on a regular dvd player(as long as it is capable of playing dvdrs)? I have a few dvds backed up as iso's on my hard drive and id like to make backups of them so i can hide the originals from my kids dangerous little claws.
