mkv to avi with WinAVI or any others

I'm trying to get an x264 .mkv file converted to and xvid .avi file using WinAVI.

I get an error saying Can't decode this file! Maybe the file is broken or the relative decoder is not installed!

I have the xvid codec installed obviously but is there something else i need to install to get this to work?

If not, anyone know of a good program to convert mkv to avi?

How did you make the MKV file and what is it?

Don't use WinAVI, no offense but it's a piece of junk.:) Try the free program, StaxRip (http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip). It works fine for H.264 > Avi, although it would be better to convert from your original source to prevent quality loss.
