View Full Version : Handbrake, detelecine, jerky

I am using handbrake to convert a S-Video recording output from a DVR to a PVR. So, the input into handbrake comes from a s-video with ac3 recording, best I can do right now. I review the recording, and, see clear signs it is 3:2 pulldown since the pattern is there throughout the movie.

So, using current handbrake svn 1896, I select detelecine and decomb (default). I change from average bit rate to constant quality. I use frame rate as same as source, since I am using the svn version. Constant quality 59%. Loose anamorphic. Below is the log.

Here is the issue. It's not like the original, which isn't surprising, but, I can't see to get rid of some jerkiness.

Specifically, when the camera is moving, the motion is jerky, you can see the background move smoothly, then, it hesitates and moves again. Mostly subtle, but, obvious to me the viewer. It's almost what you would expect if the detelecine created two progressive frames for the intrerlaced ones. Not sure though.

Can anyone suggest better settings or help me understand why that might be?

Post a clip from the source video (upload to MediaFire.com, for example). More than 100 frames would be nice.

This belongs to the MPEG-4 Encoder GUIs (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78) or Linux, Mac OS X, & Co (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=63) subforum though. The problem is not related to x264 but Handbrake and its filters, or perhaps your video capturing method.

Greets,

I think your error may be in setting 'framerate same as source'. Try setting it to 24fps instead. If it is missreading the 3:2 pulldown flag and wrongly assuming the content is really 29fps. Then 29fps is the output framerate you will get with 'same as source'.

IVTC can be tricky. Good luck.

You can't pass/capture progressive video using an S-video connection. It only supports interlaced video!

You can't pass/capture progressive video using an S-video connection. It only supports interlaced video! That's highly misleading. An S-Video connection can carry *content* that is progressive. When the capture device combines fields for storage in the PC, the frame will be progressive.

Perhaps sfatula can provide us with a short sample for testing!

Aren't you more aware after my post? :)

S-Video is analog and is indeed field based. But capture software can capture both fields and store them as a frame. If the two fields are pictures from the same temporal moment, then the captured frame will be progressive.

Here's a practical example. I used to capture Sopranos over S-Video in the early days. The resulting file was hard telecined (3P2I frames), but there was no problem to do IVTC.
