Good morning.
Not sure if I've asked this before, but I'm trying to back up some original VHS tapes to my Archos 605 WiFi via a docking station connected to my TV/VHS player. I can record the VHS output to the Archos fine, and play it back there, but can't transfer the resulting AVI to any other device, be it a PC or the other household 605 as you can only play back Archos AVIs on the specific one on which they were recorded -VLC media player only plays back the audio, VirtualDub displayd "Copy protected file" and so on.
Can anyone offer any advice - please note, I own all the original VHS tapes I wish to transfer, i just want to be a bit more flexible about what i do with the resulting files - for example, if my Archos went belly up, the AVIs would be useless as they would need that specific Archos to play back on.
Thanks in advance

If this thread (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31187) is correct, the problem is the Macrovision, which the Archos disables to get a clear image, but protects the file afterward. Try a tape from a camcorder or something not commercial and see if your files can be transfered to PC, and if so you can just use a device inline to the Archos that removes the Macrovision while recording.

This makes sense - thank you - now I just have to figure out where to obtain such a "device"..!
