View Full Version : Mythbusters Deinterlacing

I'm doing an x264 encode of some Mythbusters episodes ripped from an R1 DVD. Speed is of little importance (I'll be doing a lossless pass).
The opening sequence is a complete terror, and there is lots of high-motion clips that blur terribly when deinterlaced. I've done a quick search through the forums, and MCBob was the recommendation, but it's leaving combing.
Basically I've tried MCBob+NNEDI, YadifMod, MCBob, FieldDeinterlace, and TDeint+Vinverse.
They all are ok, but none are giving me the kind of quality I want.
Please don't suggest SeparateFields().SelectEven() as in here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=979316).
The field order changes atleast once so here are two 50MB samples:

Not telecide but FieldDeinterlace was significantly worse than MCBob

They all are ok, but none are giving me the kind of quality I want. OK, I'll bite. What is the "kind of quality" that you want?

Looks to be true interlace not telecine or 3:2 pulldown or whatever you want to call it. Open it in VDub and try the deinterlace filter with blend fields together. If that looks acceptable then i am sure there is an avisynth plugin for that, other than that i don't know what to say. I hate truly interlaced material.:devil:

this is a motioncompensated/fieldblended conversion of PAL video to NTSC, hence the blurring, ghosting artifacting, and weird staiesteppings.
deinterlace it just with any deinterlacer that suits your needs.
for a reasonable quick and stable deinterlace you might use yadifmod+nnedi. feell free to choose mcbob() or tempgaussmc().
you can't make it better by deinterlacing. the source is that bad from the start.
you might want to use some further filtering...

no deblending possible due to these reasons:
1) mostly full framerate video (50fps -> 60fps). Currently there is now avs approach known to me that would be able to automagically undo this sort of blending.
2) it is a motion compensated/interpolated conversion, this means mostly the motion is very smooth and blend-free. only motion occluded areas either are blended or contain blotchy artifacts.
the only way getting a high quality video is to get the PAL version of this footage.

"No AVS approach", as in no approach with AviSynth currently works. ;)

"No AVS approach", as in no approach with AviSynth currently works. ;) Yes, of course. It was the "now" versus "no" that I was drawing attention to, as it completely reversed the sense of the statement.
