Hi, I learned the hard way that Samsung upscaling is much worse that that of, for example, Sony ( from this review (http://www.digitalversus.com/article-364-3780-36.html), scroll down to see a photo there).
As most of my content is Standard definition, upscaling becomes a big issue. Could you recommend a good to greatest upscaling DVD players? Or should i just wait blu ray players to drop down in price until affordable 100$ level.

You could run your computer to the tv, which is IMO the best way to go. With a setup like that you can play all video/audio format, upscale with any filters you want, etc.

Hi!

All of the Toshiba upscaling standalone players perform excellent upscaling...

+1. Their HD-DVD players (remember them?) have some of the best upscalers on the market, short of ones that are upwards of 5 figures.

Don't forget the OPPO line, they have excellent upscaling...

I think the Oppo looks soft. I like the upscaling on my Sony BDP-S301 better. The picture has more clarity.

What algorithms are used by hardware upscalers?
Have there been any meaningful tests?

Will NNEDI and/or the Spline resizers perform just as well?

What do you mean by 'clarity' in this context? This word alone seems meaningless to me.

I mean edge detail and fine edge definition. My Oppo generates a softer picture, whereas the Sony generates a picture that is crisp and does not require me to turn sharpening all the way up just to feel that I'm not watching a mushy picture.

With a different and intersting new approach:

Toshiba recently announced a line of upscaling TELEVISIONS, that will use the same or similar hardware that they've used for their excellent upscaling HDDVD and Standard DVD standalone players...

When it comes to uspcaling, what's important is the chipset that handles this. The Faroudja chipsets are known to be the best ones in review after review. All players that have this chipset automatically gets very popular, including the Oppo....

In my meaning the Faroudja chipsets are the main advantage of getting a hardware player. No HTPC software filters that I know of gets even close...

Is there any good and cheap (€50) players with HDMI?
OPPO DV-981HD is certainly a very good player, but you could almost buy a Blu-ray for that amount of money.

BTW! Is there any DVD-players today who can play higher resolution DivX-files?

BTW! Is there any DVD-players today who can play higher resolution DivX-files?Yes there are such devices. They have been around for a few years now... However, they cost way more than €50 too!
