View Full Version : Does DVD Shrink correct incorrect time maps?

I've been noticing lately that with a lot of movies I rip using RipIt4Me and then opening the rip with PgcEdit, I get a message saying there are incorrect time maps. PgcEdit can correct it. If not running through PgcEdit, will DVD Shrink correct those time maps?
BTW, what exactly are incorrect time maps?

Hi!
Without getting into what time maps are, or what they may affect, I'll just tell you that I've never had a successful rip performed by RipIt4me that behaved in any unusual manner.
What are the SPECIFIC DVDs and Region numbersthat have causedPGCEdit to generate this notification?

I don't know what the time maps affect. I do know that at least 60% of all movies I've ripped with RipIt4Me, for the past year at least, and then opening that rip (through the RipIt4Me Tools) with PgcEdit, a message pops up saying there are incorrect time maps and then PgcEdit offers to fix them (which I let it do). This isn't anything new, it's the way it's always been. Set up PgcEdit in RipIt4Me Tools and try it for yourself. You will see what I mean. I don't think many people open the rips with PgcEdit like I do through the RipIt4Me process (after clicking "do it"), that's probably why it's not well known.
I brought this up before awhile back. I believe Blu said that most encoders/transcoders will fix time maps automatically (if they are incorrect) in the process. I assumed that DVD Shrink was one of those but I was asking to be sure.

I am not aware of any program named "RipIt4Me Tools" - Are you referring to something that is part of PGCEdit?

I guess, he means that you open RipIt4Me and select PgcEdit from the Tools Menu.

Yes, that's what I mean. You can configure the "Tools" option in RipIt4Me and put a program in there, like PgcEdit, Vobblanker, etc. Then using Tools, RipIt4Me will link to whatever program you have in there that you choose. When opening PgcEdit through Tools, PcgEdit will open the rip instead of you having to search for it. When PgcEdit is opening the rip, it scans it and that's when it finds the incorrect time maps (if there are any).

Thanks for clarifying, although I would still stand by what I said originally - I'll just tell you that I've never had a successful rip performed by RipIt4me that behaved in any unusual manner.
You, also apparently have not seen any unusual behavior with your RipIt4Me rips, so it would seem that your question/concern is only out of curiosity. So, I'd just ask you (for the sake of curiosity):
Do you get the same response if, instead of going to PGCEdit from within RipIt4Me, you open PGCEdit and then load the rip into it?

@setarip_old,
Whether you open the rip directly from PgcEdit or you allow RipIt4Me to open PgcEdit would have no bearing on the problem.
Mike89, have you tried running the DVD through DVDShrink before you load it into PgcEdit? Once you do that, load it into PgcEdit and check to see if there are any errors in the time maps.
I too would like to know the answer to your question but I do not have a DVD on hand.

@linx05Whether you open the rip directly from PgcEdit or you allow RipIt4Me to open PgcEdit would have no bearing on the problem.Unless you've tried what I suggested (and you've not stated that you have), you can't be sure it won't make any difference - which is precisely why I suggested "Mike89" try it...

The manner in which you open PgcEdit (either double clicking the PgcEdit .exe or calling it from RipIt4Me) has nothing to do with the inner workings of the DVD. I can put money on that.

It's certainly not worth arguing about - and you may very well be proven to be correct:
However, in a similar vein, you'll find that while using DVD Shrink set to automatically start burning with NERO, if you have later versions of NERO, it won't work properly (due to the "hooks" in the SDK set to SPECIFIC [older] versions of NERO) - but, if you use DVD Shrink with the "automatically burn with NERO" setting turned off and then use NERO manually to burn, everything works just fine.
As I've learned over many years, regarding computers (as well as many other things in life) - You don't know until you've tried ;>}

Don't worry about this. Somtimes titles are authored with one less entry in the time map table (which is a table of sectors versus the title's time in units of x seconds (i.e. it might miss the last 4 seconds - big deal).
The time map allows you to skip accurately to any place in the title via the remote. Having an entry too few is not the function of the ripper or a sign of a bad rip. But if you are worried, you can get PgcEdit to regenerate the time maps.
And, of course, DVD Shrink regenerates new time maps when it shrinks a title (it would be pretty bad if it didn't).

On a related matter - Is there a simple/quick way to fix a time map table that shows a "Time unit in seconds" of -0-, so that the table gets properly filled, thereby allowing you to jump to any point in the movie?
