I can't rip any of my movies [0-5FPS]

I have tried AutoGK (XviD), StaxRip (x264), no matter what I try doing once video encoding starts the process slows down, I get 0-5FPS on my system:

Vista SP1
Core2 Duo 1.66GHz
2GB DDR 2 667MHz
1GB Intel Turbo Memory
5200RPM Hitachi HDD

Video's have all been VOB's ripped to the HDD but encoding from DVD-ROM produces the same behavior.

Funny, didn't have any problems with Magic DVD Ripper, could it be a Windows codecs conflict? (I think Magic uses internal codecs)

Depending on your x264 settings, 5 fps or even below is quite normal for your Core2 Duo 1.66GHz ;)

I got a Core 2 Quad Q6600 2,4 GHz and I often encode at ~3 fps :D

heh, I get about 1 fps on the first pass and around 3.5 fps on the second pass for my settings on SD videos on my phenom.

Right you are, downloaded NHC, CPU gets to 90C so I'm guessing the laptop applies low level down throttling. That sucks, guess I can't encode with my laptop :P

No, I can hear the fan running, I'll have to consider returning it, it is under warranty (less than a year old) just that I have soooo many customized files & programs in it!

There is a serious problem with that laptop's cooling and that needs to be fixed right away. Normally anything over 80C or so is killer for a CPU, but 90 is just ridiculous.

Got it fixed by ACER, under warranty. Was the fan thermal sensor.

Getting 32fps now using same settings :)

Edit: Oh and I upgraded the HDD to 7200RPM Seagate

Only partially correct. Laptop CPUs are usually rated for much higher temperatures than desktop CPUs.

IIRC, older desktop C2Ds (the e6400 generation) were only rated for ~61C, while their laptop brethren were rated for 100C.

intel temperature ratings are quite ridicolous.
instead of telling the operating range or just max temps they just tell typical temps...
so the desktop chips are obvioulsy cooler (better cooled) than laptop parts but that doesnt mean a laptop CPU can work efficiently at 100C!
