cannot start video compression

I'm trying to compress a movie I made with CamStudio and subsequently edited with Virtual Dub to XviD, but whenever I go to "Save As", I get the following error:

Cannot start video compression:

An unknown error occured (may be corrupt data).
(error code -100)

Any ideas? CamStudio captured the whole 1024x768 screen and I'm cropping it to 639x504. Does XviD require videos be of a certain dimension?
