View Full Version : DVD Backup Failing

Hi, not exactly sure where this belongs but I'm having a bit of a problem making DVD back ups.
The dvds I tried to back up that are failing are: Indiana Jones and Forbidden Kingdom.
My mac can back these up with no problems and they will work in my dvd player. But when I burn them on PC they won't work, period. They use the same discs and everything, but the ones burned with my mac work and the ones burned with my PC don't.
My PC can burn data dvds and all without a problem. But when it comes to dvd back ups its a different story.
I'm guessing my burner drive is faulty or something...but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help?

It's more than likely an advanced copy protection scheme. What process did you use to get the DVD files to your computer prior to burning?
DVDFab HD Decrypter had no troubles with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for me.

I used Ripit4Me for both of them, they ripped fine. No errors or anything.

"No errors" doesn't necessarily mean they "ripped fine." RipIt4Me and FixVTS have both ceased development and are no longer being updated, so newer protections can thwart them.
Have you tried DVDFab HD Decrypter?

@MaggIvy
Neither of the R1 DVDs of those titles has any "special" or "newer" copy protection.
Based on what you've described, it sounds like your PC's burner is failing. Try either or both of the following for your PC's burner:
1) Burn at a lower speed
2) Run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

Thanks, I'll try that.
Have you tried DVDFab HD Decrypter?
Nope, I'll try it now that I know that Ripit4me is obsolete.

RipIt4Me may no longer being updated, but it is FAR from obsolete - It can properly rip more than 90% of existing DVDs. (And if RipIt4Me completes a rip with "no errors", you can be assured that the rip is good)...

Oh ok, so in that case, it could be the hardware...gonna try cleaning it and all that and will try re burning my backup again. If that doesn't work, then I might have to buy a new burner drive?

Yes unfortunately. However, they are getting so cheap now, you can get a really good high speed burner for about $30.

Alrighty, thanks for your help. I'll update if things do/don't change later.

Ok, update. I finally got a hold of a cleaning disc, I ran it and all on my burner drive. Then I went to try and do a backup at 8X, 4X, and 12X, all of those failed. They don't/won't work. Period.
This sucks.

Can you post the logfile of a failed burn?

I don't get any errors at all. It burns and everything but when I go to play it in my dvd player/recorder it won't play at all. The recorder says disc cannot be played and my dvd player completely locks up and does nothing. It tries to load and play, but it can't. Nero and dvd shrink said it burned successfully when it was finished burning. It worked before and my mac still works, just doesn't make any sense to me...

It burns and everything but when I go to play it in my dvd player/recorder it won't play at all.Since cleaning and lower burn speed didn't rectify your problem, it would appear that your burner is a "goner" (False "good burns" are not unusual when a burner is failing)...

I forgot to mention that it burned a cd that worked this morning...I guess it's problem is with dvds.

Maybe, but a bung drive usually fails first on DVDs while CD burning is still OK.
What DVDs are you using? Please read my signature.

Oh I see.
The ones I use right now is fujifilm, I used to use verbatim but my drive didn't like them. It spat them out with errors every time. My mac and all that loves verbatim though. The only thing my burner drive won't reject right now is fujifilm, but only when making cds now.

Plainly and simply, it appears it's time for you to get a new burner for your PC...

Alright, I was finally able to get a new burner drive, and nothing is changed. I get an error before I even start to burn. I tried using Cyberlink, and Nero, and no luck what so ever...I'm trying dvd flick to see if that will work.
Update: DVD Flick worked...so I guess that means there's something wrong with the other programs?
I tried Power Producer again and all I get is Error: unspecified error (80004005)
It doesn't burn or anything, just goes as far as 1 percent then stops.
I have yet to try anything using DVD shrink, I'll update later, hopefully that works now.

Just thought I'd update, again.
I was finally able to make my first successful dvd backup. Using the usual method.
Yay!
Thanks for your help.
