I have some TV episode rips in .vob format that I would like to put into divx(or something else if it's better) to put on my HTPC. I'm hoping to save some space. Does anyone know of a good guide for doing this? I've seen a lot of guides on the internet, but they were either for pay or didn't seem all that easy. Thanks for any help.

I wasn't sure if this was the correct forum. Feel free to move it if there's a better spot for it.

Where did you get the VOBs?

I got them from my DVDs. I just built a HTPC. I want to put my movie/TV show DVDs on my PC for easier watching. Thanks for the reply.

OK, most people just say they ripped their DVDs, so when they don't it raises rule 6 concerns. Have you looked at the Doom9 guides?

StaxRip (http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/) works very well for what you are doing. And if you have an HTPC then i would just go with x264 instead of divx.

Yes, but quite honestly because I have limited knowledge I've no idea what's good or not.

Also I went to look for the rules, but I would suggest they're hard to find. They're in the newbie forum, whereas most people probably go to the forum they're interested in right away.

What's the advantages of StaxRip over Divx, which I had always heard was good? What kind of file size can I expect for a 2hr movie? Is the a guide for StaxRip? Thanks for the replies

Since you're in the (Auto) Gordian Knot Forum, a look at the top of the page will show you a sticky with a number of guides for both programs. I'd suggest having a look at an AutoGK guide and using it to convert your TV episodes to either DivX or XviD AVIs.

Staxrip is an encoder whereas divx is a codec they cannot be compared; and staxrip also supports divx. As for guides, i dont know of any, but staxrip is really easy to use.

I would second x264.

As far as what kind of file size you can expect, it depends entirely on how you encode it. The only true way to determine anything of this nature is to do a few test encodes and see what quality works best for your perception and needs, and go from there. Bitrate and resolution are the two biggest factors in determining what final file size you need.

I would say divx. It is much more portable, but file size is larger for the same quality.

I sometimes wonder if you guys should make it flash like a banner advertisement to draw attention to it :p people seem to miss it

usually you decide what size you use and the quality depends on that.
