How do I fix out of sync audio (.mp4, x264 and aac)?

I encoded a .vob to mp4 with ffmpeg - result was out of sync. Repeated with MeGUI, still out of sync. Split streams and remuxed with yamb, still unsynced.

The .vob plays fine, and 30 second clips from ffmpeg play fine.

Audio seemed to be unsynced throughout the entire video, I didn't notice mis-matched rates.

1) Rule out that it's not a poorly decrypted DVD that is the cause of the sync issues (try using DVDFab or AnyDVD, if your title is new, you might have to wait a few days for an update)

2) Confirm that it's a constant delay issue, not progressive delay issue. (Check lengths of audio & video in mediainfo)

3) Determine the delay in a media player by shifting the audio +/- ms, many players use +/- keys to shift audio

4) Remux the raw streams in .mp4 with mp4box (YAMB is the GUI) and enter the determined media delay for the audio

@teddg

To be more specific regarding item 1) posted by "poisondeathray", what is the Title and Region number of your oroiginal DVD - and what software and procedures did you use to rip it to your hard drive?

Please load your .MP4 file into GSpot and post a screencapture back here...

1) I used DVD Decrypter. Re-did with DVDFab and currently re-encoding.

Does AnyDVD expire after the trial period? Or just parts of it, like DVDFab? Can AnyDVD put out a single vob instead of splitting it? Are there any free rippers like DVD decrypter that are updated, or just the commercial products you mentioned?

2) Mediainfo gui gives duration in hr and mn, no seconds, so there wasn't enough resolution to see - both were 2:23. But the separated streams made with yamb were 11 seconds different in length.

3) +/- keys to shift audio -- Cool, i didn't know this. The audio needs a delay of about 1700 ms to sound right, and then it seems to be ok for the entire movie.

4) Yamb is flaky as hell. I've tried three times to insert an audio delay. Maybe I'm doing something wrong....

I create a new mp4 and add the video and audio streams. Select video stream, properties, enter framerate (otherwise I get a warning). Select audio stream, properties and enter the delay. Then continue. Doesn't work. Go back and check the values entered in 'properties' -- they move from one file to the other, disappear and reappear in a most random way.

How do I achieve this with ffmpeg and MeGUI?

DVD is a US version. DVD decrypter used - ripped to single file with just one audio stream selected.

Here's the gspot screen of the megui version;

The screencapture does not enlarge (or transfer to imageshack) for me when clicked on.

What's the title/name of the DVD?

Sorry, fixed the link. Title is the lion, the witch and the wardrobe

This Disney release contains an early version of "RipGUard" copy protection that DVD Decrypter does not process properly (Although it APPEARS to).

You're stated re-ripping with DVDFab HD Decrypter should do the trick for you...

Yup, that fixed it. Thanks Setarip and Poisondeathray.

I'm still wondering if there is a simple way to adjust sync in an mp4 that doesn't used yamb?

Yep, another option is avidemux, set the video & audio to "copy" and format to "mp4". Check the audio shift and enter a value in ms eg. -200 and press enter, then press save with extension eg. "myfile.mp4"
