After comparing the outputs from Nero Recode 2 using neroavc encoder and from Media Coder using x264 encoder, I found that Neroavc quality is superior than x264
I have Coreavc with Zoomplayer which I used for quite some time to play x264 movie, now I began to wonder, if I switched all of my DVDs collection to neroavc movies, which one that gives the best playback for nero avc movies, coreavc with Zoomplayer or Nero Showtime ?
Thanks

Just for your info Nero AVC is h264, just the same as x264 is h264, Core AVC is also h264, they are just different encoders.
If the settings are identical between the 2 encoders quality should be identical!
As for playback there shouldnt be much of a difference between them, i guess it depends on the amoutn of post processing the players do.

Ahmed28,
Don't ask what's best, per forum rule 12. Thank you.

All H.264 decoders should deliver 100% identical output from the same video file. Even deblocking (postprocessing) is mandatory and standardized for H.264.
If one decoder delivers a different output, then it is buggy! So quality-wise it doesn't matter which decoder you use, but performance-wise it may matter a lot!
At the moment CoreAVC and DivX H.264 Decoder are significant faster on multi-core systems than libavcodec/ffdshow...
When we talk about H.264 encoders then the encoder has a huge impact on quality! And x264 seems to be one of the best you can get today, if not the best
Of course you can crank up the bitrate to a level where all encoders deliver similar/transparent quality, but for any sane bitrate x264 is an excellent choice.
I don't know how you came to the conclusion "Neroavc quality is superior than x264", but I think your comparison was invalid -or- your x264 settings were wrong.
And of course a quality comparison is only valid if both files have the exact same size (bitrate).
Have a look here for a comparison between H.264 encoders, including x264 and NeroAVC:
