View Full Version : Question about compression ratio and modes

sorry if this isnt the correct section of the forum for this specific question:

i have started using dvdrebuilder, and i find it an excellent software mainly of its ability to queue jobs.

but it lacks the ability to show me how much much compressed will be the original movie in a dvd5 disk after the compression (i only work with the main movies from the originals).
and this is essential to know the compressed ratio,so i can decide what is the suiatable compression method for the dvd movies.

so i have to open my dvd movies with nero recode, which gives the will-be compressed ratio of the movies on a dvd5 disk.
then if the ratio is >70% i choose rejig mode on rebuilder
if its <70 i choose cce mode on rebuilder
if its 100% (the original movie fits as it is on the dvd5) then i choose no compression mode.

but all this method is time consuming, especially if i have to backup 30 dvds.i was wondering if there is an alternative, simplier, quickier, method to find out what mode to choose on rebuilder for my dvds.some other software, maybe a plugin for rebuilder or something like that.

i tried to select the modes judgind on the filesizes of the original movies, but this method isnt very succesful.for example a movie has 5gb filesize, but it fits without compression on a dvd5.

so any ideas on this matter? what are you doing in order to choose the mode for your movies on rebuilder?

You should be able to find the compression percentage after you run the prepare phase in the log or you can view the segment editor. If you think the prepare phase is too long to wait, then use DVD Shrink to determine the compression percentage and then go back to RB. The percent is usually the same in the two programs give or take a few points.

You should not use one base percentage to detemine the encoder. It depends on a lot more, such as if it is an action movie or a slow moving drama. It also depends on the original bitrate. 80% of 8,000 kbs will generally look better than 80% of 2,000 kbs. But then again it depends on the particular source.

I would use CCE or HC for everything that needs compression. For movies that require only a little compression, use the segment viewer to tweak the cells. For instance, you may only have to compress the credits and you can leave the movie part alone. This will save not only the quality, but a lot of time. Why Rejig the whole movie? You would only lose quality.

And if no comporession is required, DVDRB will tell you automatically.

Great idea. Very useful too.
