compare if the video is damaged?

Are there any tools to check if the video file is damaged or not?

when u zip up a video for transport the zip/rar format allows u to check the files, what about avi/mov/mp3 file types??

when i put it onto a USB key, they filesizes change as well as the datestamp

The USB stick may have a different block size than your hard disk. A file when created gets an updated creation date. Again, is this a file that you made and why do you think it is damaged?

of course i made it, but i need to know that transporting it wont damage it internally, say if i use a lossless codec like lagarith

Copying it to a usb key shouldn't damage it, but the filesize shouldn't change.

What happens when you copy it back from the usb key to the PC? Does the filesize change again?

Perhaps your usb key is corrupted?

This has nothing to do with a codec.

would it be a hex comparison?

AFAIK you will lose the file summary if you copy to a certain FS (fat maybe?), could that be what you mean?

I don't know enough about this, but couldn't you compare a MD5 hash checksum?

all i need is how to compare files and if videos and audio formats have dedicated tools for it, gents......say if i transfer thru the wireless LAN, how can i be sure it the same file

I also like "Little MD5 Creator" and use it since several years:

It's designed to compare file A to file B, while Nero's Tool is designed to compare one file to a known MD5 hash.

Question: can't you generate a MD5 Hash in the Nero Tool with the 2nd step first? Then use that as your "known" MD5 hash?

thanks all, what about if my hdd plays up and does the usual hdd check and i allow auto fix?? some of my zips get damaged...how can i tell if video/audio files are damaged without a comparision file? there is nothing in the header?

Archives, such as ZIP or RAR, usually contain checksums. So if you open/extract a damaged archive, you will see an error message.
If all files extract successfully, you can be sure the files are correct (at least equal to the files that had been used to create the archive).

But if you just have the plain video file, you can't know if it is correct or not. Except for comparing it to the original file...

Hi!some of my zips get damagedRather than worrying about comparing two files, you should be worried about a faulty drive - and replace it...

As far as comparing two files, you can use the compare function of WinHex:Compare: This command is used to compare two files or disks byte by byte.

Yes. I never said the Nero Tool is bad.

And of course you can "abuse" the Nero Tool to compare two files, just like you describe. But Little MD5-Creator does it in one single step ;)
