Here's my thing, I don't have a 5.1 system or a receiver connected to my pc. I'm using stereo speakers. My onboard realtek acl888 sound card does not have a spdif in or out. But it is 5.1 capable and has digital output.
I've got my time warner HD dvr audio output going to my HD PVR via spdif. Video is via component cable.
The HD PVR is connected to my pc via usb. (both audio & video is transferred via usb) In the realtek sound manager panel I can set "realtek digital output" as the default device. But when i hit "test" i can see that the green bar is moving but i do not hear any sound.
My assumption/understanding is that if the sound card is capable of doing/handling spdif it can downmix the audio from spdif into ac3 2.0 or something else and output it into whatever speakers you have plugged in. My understanding was that you didn't need the receiver to decode audio if your sound card can handle it.
