This is potentailly a real easy question but I cannot locate the correct answer so far.

If the below is true

720x576 4:3 12:11 PCH PAL
720x576 16:9 16:11 PCH ANAMORPHIC PAL
720x480 4:3 10:11 PCH NTSC
720x480 16:9 40:33 PCH ANAMORPHIC NTSC

Then what is the SAR/PAR X264/XVID for

320x240 4:3 ? PCH Film 24fps

PS I assume it as film because of the 24fps I could be wrong. I got the video information from the program mediainfo.

Use the ratio on the original DVD.

But is there a formula too work it out ?

Work it out to what end?
Changing the PAR/SAR ratio to anything other than the original will distort the image, ie. circles become ellipses, unless the resize compensates for it (or vice versa) but that's messy.

The quick and dirty answer might be to load the file into GSpot and use the PAR value it reports.

320x240 4:3 ? PCH Film 24fps -- 1:1, it is already 4:3

I guess the point I am confused/interested in is that a 4:3 Pal is different to a 4:3 NTSC in that Pal is 12:11 and NTSC is 10:11, I assummed maybe incorrectly that the Sar/Par was different because of frame rate otherwise why would 4:3 be different for Pal/Ntsc ?

Aspect ratios have nothing at all to do with frame rate, but everything to do with frame dimensions.

PAL and NTSC 4:3 have different frame sizes (hence SARs), so need different PARs to achieve the required DAR of 4:3.

DAR = SAR x PAR

Thanks for clearing that up.
