I'm new here, so I hope I've chosen the right thread to post my questions.

There we go:

See, I've always seen my dvd and vcd in a 4:3 TV or in my PC display (4:3 as well), but now I have bought a portable dvd and its screen is 16:9. Now some of the VCD look a little "deformed", so I tried to use that dvd option that allows you to change the screen type from 16:9 to 4:3 (or vice virsa) but it's no use. Although I change that option the screen does not change. I thought that it had something to do with the VCD I had created, so I played a DIVX file and ¡surprise!, this time when I changed that option it actually changed the screen. Ok, I got an original dvd movie and played it. Again, when I changed the 16:9 to 4:3 option nothing happened. So, to be sure that it wasn't only a "failure" on the portable dvd, I played the three kind of movies (dvd, vcd and divx) in a standrad dvd player, with the same results.

Does anybody know what's the problem? Why the player does not seem to change anything in the screen when playing mpeg 1/2 but it does when you play a DIVX?

I'm REALLY pissed off with this!

Changing the aspect ratio that the player outputs shouldn't make any difference on the screen, unless you are using a letterbox or pan and scan mode.

Maybe the reason the divx changes aspect is because its encoded with anamorphic pixel aspect......

When both players behaved the same way did the thought cross your mind that this is how it's supposed to behave? Rather than getting pissed off at it did you try reading the manual for either player to find an explanation of what the aspect mode does?

@kikecam

Hi!

Regarding VCDs, the options are limited as follows:

Resolution:
NTSC: 352x240
PAL/SECAM: 352x288
Aspect Ratio:
NTSC: 107:80 (0.3% difference from 4:3)
PAL/SECAM: 4:3

So, to be sure that it wasn't only a "failure" on the portable dvd, I played the three kind of movies (dvd, vcd and divx) in a standrad dvd player, with the same results.With regard to standard DVDs, you certainly should be able to alter the display on your television by either changing the display setting on your standalone player or the TV itself...

I don't think the manual has such technical references. I guess DVD and VCD have some kind of "predetermined" behaviour so it makes no use to try and change the player screen type.
