View Full Version : Over 15 hours for only 3% first running!

Hello everybody

First: Sorry for my bad English.

Information:
I have used Auto Gordian Knot over 60 times now and every time it worked very good. No problems, not very slow. Just good. I startet the running on the evening, in the next morning, the Laptop was turned off and the movie was saved. The TV-documentaries, which I recorded on DVD-R, had running times between 20 and 100 minutes. I gave them the size between 50 and 350MB (640x368). I put the DVD-R inside the computer and let it there for the process. I always did. I have AnyDVD to make my computer code free. I have also SpyBot and AntiVir. But they were always active and never bugged Auto Gordian Knot. There was never problems.

Versions:
VirtualDub 1.6.19 (Video -> Fast recompress)
Auto Gordian Knot 2.45 („correct color if needed“ is not active)

System:
Computer / System: Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
T8300 @ 2.40GHz 2.40GHz
RAM 4.00GB
32-Bit
All other programms are closed. No internet. AntiVir, SpyBot, AnyDVD, PDF-Maker, Camera are turned off. USB-harddrives are turn off.

Problem: Suddenly it does not work anymore. I startet a running like others, but after over 15 hours (!), there was only 3% of the first running over (not the second one)!! I wanted the AVI 350MB with 640x368. The running time of the documentation is about one hour and 30 minutes. It can not be a problem of the dvd-part of the computer ( I tried also an USB-DVD-machine). Both does not work. It can not be a problem of the DVD-R (from Panasonic), because a DVD-R from Sony is also very slow. And: An old DVD-R from Panasonic, which I have saved without problems very fast (50MB size), is now also very very slow. On the harddrive there are about 120GB left. The space should not be a problem. The documentation is saved on the DVD as four *.VOB-Files ( together 3.02 GB). But also this should be a problem, because I have also saved such big files before.

I have changed no functions. Why is AutoGK now so slow? So slow, that I can not use it anymore.

Should I delete AutoGK and VirtualDub and install them again? I tried but it did not work (ok, I installed the old setup.exe-files and no new ones).

Here is the log-file:

I want to know, why the speed is suddenly so slow?

My speculation: It must be because an Windows Vista update. Because with the old Windows XP (SP3, Intel 1.5 GHz, 496MB Ram) notebook it does save the movies over night without problems. I tried it and it worked!!! The same film, which was not finished after 15 hours with Vista, is finished with XP over a night! Now I use the old notebook, because with the new one, it is not working. It must be an update or upgrade from Vista, that makes Auto Gordian Knot so slow (or an update from one of the following programs: Spybot - Search & Destroy, AntiVir PE Classic or Ad-Aware 2008). But it think, it is because an Vista-update.

Well, I do not really need help, because I have still my old notebook. And with this one, it is working fast!

Hi!

It sounds like the drive has switched to (much slower) PIO mode from (much faster) DMA mode.

To re-implement DMA, do the following:

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

Thanks for the fast answer.

If am not wrong with the understanding, the faster DMA mode is already acitve.

Norton is indicating that the link you've provided includes a "trojan horse"...

Indrid

Then this is a false warning...

I had also once Norton... but today I think Norton is for nothing.

http://www.imageshack.us/ is like http://tinypic.com/ an image-upload-homepage. I have used it very often in very much message boards. And others too.

First: Sorry for the late answer.

Here is the pic of my German "Device Manager".

http://i44.tinypic.com/2wqydj5.jpg

or only as a link: http://i44.tinypic.com/2wqydj5.jpg

My questions:

IDE channel = ATA Channel 0 ?
"IDE...Controllers" = IDE ATA/ATAPI-Controller ?

remove = turn off the IDE channel ?

uninstall = uninstall the IDE channel ?

And after the reboot I must click again to the "IDF ATA/ATAPI-Controller" to change the setting for "DMA if available". What, if this option is not there then?

Versions:
VirtualDub 1.6.19 (Video -> Fast recompress)
Auto Gordian Knot 2.45 („correct color if needed“ is not active)
Hi,

2.45 is quite old, you can safely update to 2.52 (last rev without VAQ) or 2.55 last rev with VAQ.
AGK doesn't use Virtual Dub but virtualdubmod; the rev hasn't changed it is 1.5.4.0; to check or re-install !

Predicted comptest value is: 11.41%: this is wayyyy too low and maybe responsible for the snail speed; either check the width to "auto width" (recommended) or raise the size until you have at least 50% for the comp-test.

I just realized this is an old thread but the recommendations are still valid.

Hello.

I have downloaded AutoGK 2.55 and installed it. It is still too slow.

And in the Device-Manager in "IDE ATA/ATAPI-Controller", the "ATA Channel 0" is already in DMA mode.

Why does it work with an old XP-notebook but not with the new Vista-notebook?

OK, I can use the old notebook, but one day it will give up because it is old.

Why does Auto Gordian Knot work correct with an old notbook (XP Windows) and with the new notebook (Vista Windows) not ? Or : Not anymore (because in the beginning it worked good)?

VirtualDub 1.6.19 (Video -> Fast recompress)I'm not a user of AutoGK, but doesn't it specifically require the use of VirtualDubMOD and not standard VirtualDub?

I believe you have to use the AutoGk installation file as downloaded and then not change or update any of the components. After all it is a " sort of one button solution".
I use AutoGk quite often and have never had any problems with it and it really flies with my new Windows 7 and i7 processor compared to XP SP3

With the old notebook there is the same VirtualDub and the same file was saved in a few hours as an avi-file.

I have downloaded the new version and installed it then. I have not uninstalled the old version. I have updated it. Or should I uninstall the version before install the new version? The strange fact is, that I had no problems in the beginning with Vista. But from one day to another, it does not work anymore.

Well if I had this sort of problem I would uninstall the original install and clean out the registry and any instances of AutoGK and start afresh with a new and complete installation - I'm using the latest version and it was a clean install on my Windows7 computer.

Indrid

I made an uninstall of AutoGK and all the components and made a new install. No change.

But I have not made the reg cleening. Because this is not easy. Even with an programm this is still difficult. Or do you know a good programm to clean the reg? Or can you tell me where the keys from AutoGK and the components are?

How is the speed of the PC for other tasks?
I'm wondering if maybe it's an antivirus program or something similar slowing you down. What if you booted into safe mode and tried a conversion?

Indrid

@yetanotherid
The notebook is very fast. I have even Pinnacle Studio 12 and can use it without problems.
I do not think, that the anti-virus-programs are the problem, because I tried to turn them off.

What if you booted into safe mode and tried a conversion?
This is a good idea! I will try it over night and can report tomorrow.

Edit:
I can not choose the input in the save mode! Even if I try to writ the path and folder inside it does not work. I think, the safe mode does not start the needet exe.
