I have ripped HD-DVD's to M2TS files with TsMuxer (after stripping out and down converting the audio to ac3 via eac3to). I'm playing them back in Vista home Premium with Windows Media Player/Media Center in conjunction with CoreAVC and Haali media splitter (made the necessary registry changes for WMP/MC to recognize .m2ts files).
The problem is that at specific, repeatable points during playback, the video loses sync which results in a scrambled picture. Audio is not affected.
Here are some other observations:
- Stopping and restarting the playback clears the scrambled picture and the film plays fine until the next occurrence.
- Happens with all other HD-DVD's to one degree or another.
- Does not happen with Blu-ray's ripped and played back in the same manner.
- When played back without this problem occurring (see below for how), the point where the sync loss would occur does experience a very minor stutter - perhaps a layer change?
Troubleshooting has shown the following:
- Substituting ffdshow for CoreAVC has no effect.
- Haven't tried another DirectShow media splitter - don't know of one.
- Problem does not occur when playback is via PowerDVD 8.
- Problem occurs on a system with a Core 2 Duo processor (both 1.86GHz and 2.60GHz devices).
- Problem does not occur when running Pentium 4 3.60GHz processor, but then the system can't keep up and video/audio stuttering is experienced.
The rigs this is all running on are Core 2 Duo's (1.86GHz & 2.60GHz) with 4Gb and 2Gb of memory, respectively. Video cards are nVidia 8000 class with monitors connected via DVI. The OS is installed a on separate drives, the m2ts files on another and all have been defragged and checked for proper operation.
This is really puzzling.
Does anyone have any ideas?
