I want to rip the movie Memento from DVD to x264 right now. I guess that most of you know this masterpiece (if you don't, WATCH IT) and it's extraordinary style. The DVD offers a feature that plays it backwards (chronological) by playing the chapters in a different order.
Now I'm wondering if it is possible to implement this in a mkv file (or any other container)?

i prefer Otnemem
using mkvmerge you can order the chapter as you want... but YOU must select it when playing movie.. otherwise it play straightfully

An alternative strategy would be to encode to MPEG-4 ASP and either MP3 or the original AC3 in an AVI container and use a common application like Virtualdub or Avidemux to cut the encode into different scenes and then append them back together in a different order.

reversing the video is not the same as playing sections in reverse order.
but yes, matroska has the ordered chapters feature.
you can specify the chapter start and end times to be out of order according to the video's natural timeline.
it will reconstruct the timeline to how you specify it with this feature, so you can have it play the chapters in reverse order.

Hmmm, i rented this movie once; But i cant remember such a feature on the rental ... and i allready found it a brilliant movie in the original chapter-order. And for this movie, reordering actually makes sence :)
But i'm gonna wait for the BR to see it again ... Since i've switched to BR DVD's dont do it for me anymore ... guess i'm spoiled :o

Like other people have said, you can change the chapter order around easily with ordered chapters.
