All AVI files not playing

Is there any reason why all AVI files are not playing properly in Vista? Some of them are created by myself using Nero via Nero Vision to Nero Digital. Others are from different sources. Some will start playing for a few seconds while others will play only sound.

That isn't necessarily a DivX problem.

Download RadScorpion's GraphStudio and drag and drop one of the problem files onto it to see which DirectShow filters are involved in rendering the media. One of these filters is probably at fault. If you've created the files using Nero then Nero's filters may be decoding them. Check that your Nero software license is correctly registered, I seem to remember that some of the Nero decoders won't operate unless the software is registered properly. Maybe you have used a trial version and it has since expired?

Also make sure you have updated the drivers for your video and audio hardware.

Let me look for a PC that has XP or earlier. I'm playing them under Vista. Here is a GSpot shot of one that plays in Quicktime for about 3 seconds and then the video stops but the audio keeps on going.

What does a HighDef H.264/MPEG-4AVC have to do with .AVIs?

It's possible that your computer is too slow to play them or that vista slowed it down to the point that it cannot play them. High-definition AVC is a LOT more hardware intensive than anything that can be placed in an avi container.

I think he or she had the "Hide extensions for know file types" box checked, and he or she just thought they were AVIs when they are actually MP4s and whatever else they are.

Not if he/she used Nero, which I think he/she did.

It offers no indication of what type of file it is creating (I think for the sake of simplicity for less experienced users); it merely asks you where to "burn" your project (and it saves the files as .mp4 in the directory that you specify).:)

Sorry took me a while to come back. Don't really know if it's MP4 or AVI. I used Nero to create those and I selected NeroDigital. The software automatically added the .AVI extension. I still haven't found an XP machine to test the files yet. And no, I don't have a slow machine.

Oh, and Gus is a he. :)
