View Full Version : Changing Default Audio Stream

I backed up "The Crimson Rivers" dvd that, although has a native 5.1 French audio track, the R1 version has a default 5.1 English audio track.

In PgcEdit, how can I change this? If I need to post any info from within PgcEdit just let me know.

Post a screenshot of the PGC Editor for the movie PGC and the domain stream attributes (Ctrl-A) for the VTST domain containing the movie.

Anyway, what you can do is use the Jump to PGC on DVD insert function. Just trace to the main menu (which is your stop point) and instead of stopping there, continue on to the audio menu and select French and then return to the main menu before executing the function. Save and test that French plays.

Did you try the Jump to PGC function as I suggested. Obviously, English is being set as a default playback language, whereas you want French, right?

I've never used the trace method past the main menu to do that Jump2PGC to bypass warnings and such. Can you explain what to do after the main menu pops up in trace? i.e. what to click on to execute what you suggested properly.

Click on audio menu. Select the language you want. Then, if you are not already back at the main menu, click on main menu. Then select the Jump2PGC function.

Note that this function has a drawback: if the menu has an intro (played only the first time the menu is accessed), it will be skipped.

But that can be remedied! Figure out which gprm is responsible for going to cell/program 2 and initialise it to the value it was the first time the main menu PGC was entered.

Sorry for not fully knowing the order to trace to this properly. So I start the trace and the main menu pops up as shown in the photo below. Do I click on the "Audio" button? Then RUN, which brings me to the Audio Menu, then click on the French menu button, but after this what do I click to get back to the main menu properly (if I'm even doing this right to begin with)?

Do not use the "Audio" button in PgcEdit. (See the note below.) Click on the "Audio Set Up" button of your main menu, activate it and continue to trace. In the audio menu, activate the button of your preferred language, and go back to the main menu, just like with a real player. Do the same thing with the Subtitles menu if necessary. When the right streams are selected and you come back to the main menu, stop the trace. Remember that you have to stop the trace when the target PGC is entered (when the first pre-command is selected but not executed yet.) The trace should break automatically at the right position if you have set a breakpoint on the right PGC. Finally, execute the Jump2PGC function.

Note that using the "Audio" and "Subpic" buttons in the PgcEdit window can work fine with some DVDs, but since those buttons are not present on almost all remote controllers of the standalone players, they are often used to do completely different things than jumping to the corresponding menu. It's why it is recommended to use the "normal way" to access the menu whenever possible.

Okay so here's what I am doing (and the English track is still being played initially):

I start the trace
I click on run
The main menu comes up
I click on Audio on the virtual menu, then SELECT
I select French, then SELECT
I select to go back to main menu, then SELECT
Once at main menu I do toggle pre/post breakpoint
Then I run trace again
Then I run Jump2Pgc control and save

No - step 8 restarts the trace but you didn't go to the audio menu. Do this:

(a) Steps 1, 2, 3.
(b) Set the breakpoint (8).
(c) Start trace again and do steps 3, 4, 5 and 6.
(d) Step 9.

Blu, I agree, but with some DVDs, it might be necessary to include steps 4 and 6 in (a). This is the case when the main menu is divided in two PGCs, the first one with an intro being called only once, and the second one used when the navigation returns to the menu. If you don't do steps 4 and 6, the breakpoint will be on the first PGC, and useless.

Of course, the first time, it is not necessary to select the right audio stream. Steps 1 to 6 are necessary only to set the breakpoint on the right PGC. You can even skip them and set the breakpoint manually if you know exactly what PGC is the target PGC.

So, the easy and general method (that should work with all DVDs) is:

Part 1: determine the target PGC and set the breakpoint:
1. start the trace
2. click on run
3. the main menu comes up
4. click on Audio on the virtual menu, then SELECT
5. select to go back to main menu, then SELECT
6. once at main menu, set the pre/post breakpoint

Part 2: trace to the target PGC and set the default streams
7. restart the trace (click on the Insert DVD icon)
8. click on run
9. the main menu comes up
10. click on Audio on the virtual menu, then SELECT
11. select French, then SELECT
12. select to go back to main menu, then SELECT

Part 3: run Jump2PGC
13. when the trace stops at the breakpoint, run Jump2Pgc

Note: After step 11 or 12, it might also be necessary to go to the subtitle menu, it you need to change the default subpic too.

That worked beautifully! Thanks so much. This will prove to be very useful if I encounter such an issue again.

I have a DVD in which the first menu is Widescreen or not. If I go to the audio menu to change the default language, I cannot go back to that initial menu (I cannot use that method).
In the audio menu, the difference between the "English" and "French" buttons is "Set Audio Stream=1".
I tried to insert that command at what I thought was appropriate places (using Trace command). Usually, I am lucky enough to make it work ( trial and error) but not this time.
Then I look at the logs of playing the movie with default language and same thing after having changed the default language to French ( I saw some gprm changes but the logs are long and difficult to compare).
Any suggestion on how to figure out the problem in a more systematic way (should I change a value of a gprm or insert the set audio command somewhere?).
Thx in advance.

The stream is probably set indirectly via a gprm. See which gprm is set to 0 or 1 when the audio stream changes and change that to your desired value. After which, you'll notice a SetSTN Set audio stream = gprm(x) to actuially set the stream.

Thanks ,blutach.
I must have done something wrong but do not know what.
I made some changes to make sure that the gprm are identical to the ones I should have had if I changed the default language through the audio menu.

It seems ( I checked 3 times) that I have different languages with the same gprm ( all of them) .Thanks in advance.

What do the Domain Stream Atts say? And which language do you actually want? It's a matter of setting gprm(1) before the title is entered, isn't it?

The Domain Stream Attributes say:
Audio 0: en
Audio 1: fr
The purpose is to have "fr" as default language.
Straight from the rip, I had gprm(1)=0 in the bold sections.
if I change the audio to "fr" in the audio menu, I have gprm(1)=1 in the bold sections.
I made some changes to have gprm(1)=1 in the bold sections without going to the audio menu
(just by changing an existing command: set audio stream=0 to 1: usually this works).
The audio is still "en".

Thanks in advance.

Are you ever going to use the English stream, or are you going to strip it? In the latter case, move the French stream to position 0 in the DSA (i.e. swap it with stream 1) and hard code every Set Audio Stream statement to constant value 0. Then you'll probably find gprm(1) is freed up as a useless gprm.

As for clicking on the play button, unless gprm(1) has been set to 1 before pressing Play, then you'll get the audio stream that is in gprm(1).

I would like to keep both languages. Before clicking the Play button, all the gprm and sprm are identical (using the "Watch All" window). I am using PowerDVD 6 as a player to check the language.
I am moving on. Thanks anyway.

(just by changing an existing command: set audio stream=0 to 1: usually this works)Try to insert, at the same place, Set gprm(1) =(mov) 1.

If that doesn't work, you can also kill the first language selection menu and select the French button during the operation. That menu will not be shown any more when you insert the DVD, and French will be the default. Similarly, you can also use Jump To PGC Upon DVD Insert to bypass the language selection menu.

Thank you. Got it working.
I may have found something strange, at least I do not understand it?
in this DVD, I have a first menu (widescreen or not).
Before going to that menu, I have "(SetSTN) Set Audio stream = 0" that I change to 1, so sprm(1)=1 (confirmed by Watch sprm window). It does not work. If I insert Set gprm(1)=(mov) 1 , it still does not work.
After the Widescreen menu, I am going to a regular menu (Play, setup....). Between the first and second menu, I have "Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)" so gprm(1)=sprm(1)=1 (confirmed by Watch All window).
After the play button ( in the pre-commands), I have "Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)".

In order to make it working, I had to change the "Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)" in the pre-commands of the Play button to "Set gprm(1)=(mov) 1 "(even if the Watch all window ( and the log) indicated as expected that sprm(1) and gprm(1) were all along equal to 1 ).
Thanks a lot.

Edit:I do not know if it matters but all the "Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)" are followed by:
Set gprm(1) &=(and) 0x0007 (preserve bits 0-2)

Edit (2): Really cosmetics. When editing a command,"By type", "Set" "Sprm" , in the list, I can select audio,sub-picture or angle. If I select one, may be the appropriate selection should be on "set to " instead of " do not change".

Anything you "do not change" is not affected by the SetSTN. Which is why there is "do not change". It allows you to set any combination of audio, subs or angles, while leaving the others intact.

IMO, the strange problem you have noticed is probably caused by a bug in your player. Try the DVD with another software player, and burn a RW to check it on your standalone. Anyway, if PgcEdit displays the right stream number in its virtual player when the movie is playing, it's the stream that should be played in any player (unless its format is not supported by the player, for example if stream 1 is a DTS stream and your player cannot decode it.)

In order to make it working, I had to change the "Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)" in the pre-commands of the Play button to "Set gprm(1)=(mov) 1 "(even if the Watch all window ( and the log) indicated as expected that sprm(1) and gprm(1) were all along equal to 1 ).Take care. Forcing the stream in the pre-commands of the movie is dangerous, as your audio selection menu will probably not work any more. Stream 1 will always be used, regardless of the selection you did in the menu.

If I select one, may be the appropriate selection should be on "set to " instead of " do not change".You mean that PgcEdit should enable the audio, subpic or angle by default, according to the selected menu item, right? I'm not sure it's easy to implement, but I will have a look. Anyway, if you edit an already existing command, the content of the command editor reflects always the current command. But if you replace a NOP or any other command, it uses default values that can probably be modified.

Sorry. I did not have another software player but a hardware player confirmed that it is a software player bug (PowerDVD 6).

Agreed but I checked that before posting and in this particular DVD, it is working because I had two
""Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio stream number)" after the Play button.

Not important at all.

Edit: If anyone can suggest a free alternative to PowerDVD to check the navigation.... Thanks.
