View Full Version : DivX ethics

You know the entertainment industry really pisses me off how they treat people that try to excersise fair use rights. But right now I almost have to defend them, but at the same time I'm defending me and my right to back-up my own property or view a movie that I bought in my PocketPC or a CD-rom at work or school.
You see I just got through chatting with this guy on AOL instant messenger. He had something about DivX in his profile and so I thought I might email him to see if he had any pointers, how long he had been encoding, ect. He had not a clue as to how to rip a movie, but yet he was bragging that he had over 200 movies in his DivX collection. Now given that he's an idiot, I see why the guys in Hollywood are up in arms. But, at the same time, it's people like that they should be after. I can justify my position, I could probably even do a pretty good job of justifiying it in court, but in a twisted kind of way I hope he goes to prison and gets screwed someplace rather uncomfortable, I'm not talking about the back of a Volkswagon.
BTW, I know some of you guys are probably into file sharing. Just so you know, I don't have a problem with file sharing personally. I do have a problem with people that don't contribute to the "pot." I've been cut off from people before in the middle of my downloads, but at the same time have stayed up half an hour later than I wanted to so someone could finish downloading a file from me. I see people that don't have any files shared on their own hard drive. This is FILE LEACHING, not file sharing. Ok, I've done enough ranting and raving, and I hope no one is offended by what I had to say. I realize I'm "preaching to the choir" here. If you guys feel agree or feel differently let me know.

Lo,
I usually use morpheus if there is nothing i want on ftp sites. With that said: personally i cannot see the difference between that AOL guy you mentioned and anybody else if they are sharing *copyrighted* files across the net - just because you're "sharing" don't make it any more legal right ??
Oh yeah - if you find anybody that is "leeching" not sharing - boot 'em, the faster the better!

Is that gay bashing? I think you're being a little sensitive about that. When ever I talk about a serious topic I try to introduce some humor just to let people know I don't take life too seriously. There was no offense intended.
Gill: I don't hate gay people
Brody: So you love them?
Gill: YES! I mean NO!
Brody: Textbook closetcase self-loather, can't be comfortable with his own sexuallity.

Copyright!
Is just another way of powerful orgs opressing the masses!
The bible would neve have survived if all those monks were not allowed to copy the bible over and over by hand.
Intellectual property rights!
How would Jesus have viewed a farmer who thought of a new way to plant his crops, one that doubled the yield? Should the farmer keep it secret and make his neibour pay to use it or should he share it freely with everyone. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that question!
It is better to give than receive. You cannot steal a thought or idea.
Keep on copying God and Jesus is on your side!

Sorry, I have to agree with others - i didn't pick that up at all..... like isn't it a joke where the point is that nobody can have two "real" fathers ( as opposed to a "real" father and "real" mother - i use " " because two gay men would probably be able to raise a child as well as anybody else, but they could not procreate themselves - tho let's not get into a arguing session about that pls :) )

Whilst I don't follow any religious persuasion i agree with this - and there's the fact that imo a lot of movies these days are pretty, erm..., bad - basically the ( hollywood ) movie studios ( or financiers ) follow a philosophy of "low risk, high gain" with the movies they make which leads to the "95% of [ movies ] are crap" rule becoming oh so true - as a consumer it doesn't really make you want to contribute to the whole business with your cashola without at least sampling a copy first.

There is no gay bashing at all in that.

MxxCon - Are you a homosexual? If not, then don't fight someone
else's fight. Ticks me off how sometimes heterosexuals are offended
at 'gay jokes' more than homosexuals.
It's not your fight.

I hate to bring this up but, why is it when someone calls someone else a dumbass, the person calling the names cannot spell worth a damn? MxxCon, you should "definitely" use your spell check before you call someone a dumbass :D
I agree with the other's, I didn't see any homosexual insults.

He probably thought I was gay bashing because I quoted the greatest president of the 20th century in my sig. Republicans often (and some may argue, unfairly) get accused of gay-bashing. Believe me I'm no Republican. What you do in your own bedroom is your own business as long at doesn't involve my children or pets.

Read the forum rules... Please, stop insulting each other. Thanks!
And this file sharing stuff... Who cares? If someone want to download movies over the net, please do so. I will buy movies that I like (that have a good DVD edition, no cutted movies, please :) ), and surely not make bootlegs of it. That's because I want that there will be new good movies...
BTW, is there a "Memento" DVD out there with more than just the movie and the trailer (I hate such DVD's)?
Cheers,
Ookie.
