Ok, here is what i have been doing and I was wondering if there is a way to get the files a little smaller?

Right now I have riped abunch of my DVD's to .VOB with DVD decripter. Then I used VOB2MPG so that there would be no loss of quality. This is great and I kinda want the .mpg file format. But each movie is about 4.9 GB Is there anyway to get this smaller? I mean 2GB is fine, I will not be putting these on any media, I am using this to stream in my home from a media server.

As of right now I still have all the orriginal .VOB files and the new .mpg files. Anyone have any tips on a way to keep great 100% quality and keep the file size a wee bit smaller?

You are going to lose quality no matter what, the key is minimizing the loss. Try converting a dvd with StaxRip using an x264 constant quality preset. Or you could use AutoGK (a favorite among newbies:)) which keeps pretty good quality.

Usually there are multiple audio streams as well as subtitles in the VOB files. Removing streams with DVD Shrink or a similar app can cut down on the file size, sometimes dramatically, with no affect on the quality.

If you want to make the video smaller, quality must be lost, but reducing the size by 1/2 will not decrease the quality too much (but ly there's really no point in reducing the size by only 1/2)

btw, VOB2MPG is completely useless; all u need to do to convert the vob to a mpg is rename it (my computer>folder options>view>uncheck "hide extensions for known filetypes"). Then go to ur .VOB files and rename to .mpg.

12 cents per GB isn't half bad, now is it ?
