Ok so I have a 23 minute anime. I have finally figured out the best settings for me personally to encode. But I would like to know one thing, what is a good amount of b-frames for a 23 minutes anime?
Details:
Codec (Video): H.264
Codec (Audio): AAC
Container: MP4
Any suggestions?

The best method would be to run a first pass with b-adapt 2 with 16 bframes and look at the consecutive bframe count yourself.
In my own testing, I've determined that somewhere between 8-10 is good. Anything afterwards and I started getting diminishing returns (0.1% or so).
When I'm feeling really masochistic, though, I'll still use 16 bframes. It's really a matter of preference and the amount of time you're willing to put into an encode. If you need it more quickly, use less bframes.
This is all assuming you're using b-adapt 2.

lol he's no worse than your latest obsession with lossless =DBut lossless is actually useful. :p
I use it for storing FRAPS videos.

The obsession is Touhou, every contribution to x264 is just a better means to store them. XD
On a more serious note, could the method posted by skystrife be used as a general guide to the rough best b-frame requirements of a representative sample of the material? A whole season of any TV show is generally pretty consistent, even whole genres probably. I have a feeling that talk shows, news, game shows, and even "reality" TV could use a lot of B-frames, but I haven't had a chance to test that yet.

"reality" TV could use a lot of B-frames
Now that's the mother of all obsessions : using cpu cycles to encode "reality TV" !
cheers
