xvid options

Hi Guys

Im having a problem with xvid, but before i get into it let me say that i have searched and there are no posts that i found that answer what im looking for, so if someone finds one i apologise in advance.. and i own the dvds being discussed....

I have a load of dvds that i want to convert to avi and store on a fat32 hdd for my ps3 and i wont the file size to be around 700mb to get decent quality but not take up to much space.. Plus i cant carry an ex hdd easier than a load o dvds to a friends house for example

I am wondering is the a general settings range for quantization restrictions setting that produce good quality in general from dvd sources? Im not looking for the best just reasonably good..


I have used these settings on a vob that is 1hr 38mins 12 secs long and am using these quant settings 151515 and mpeg as the quant type.. but the outputted file doesn't look gd at all
any suggestions???

also before converting in vd mod i null transform the boarders should i then resize it?

Just use AutoGK in Quality-based mode.

Yes we realize that x264 is better looking and better for compression BUT it is not better supported with standalones, k?

Yes we realize that x264 is better looking and better for compression BUT it is not better supported with standalones, k?And yet you're so much of a "fanboy" that you make the assumption that everyone using Xvid is using it because they have standalones: there couldn't possibly be any other reason.

1. There's much hardware that supports H.264 and not MPEG-4 ASP.
2. If he's encoding for standalones, he would have to deal with the issues of Qpel, GMC, B-frames, etc (which he didn't mention), so I assumed that...
3. He wasn't encoding for standalones (I think).

But I could be wrong.

(Also, despite apparently being an "x264 fanboy," I answered his question about xvid options and you didn't.)

I have made plenty of 700MB Xvid rips where the quality was fantastic

Yes, if you were encoding DaVinci Code for a 700MB Xvid, then thats the degree that he is right in

"700MB", "Xvid", "DVD rip", and "decent quality" (such a subjective word) may live together, when the resolution is reduced and perhaps some denoising applied. Fairuse and AutoGK tends to reduce the resolution for this purpose. A soft custom matrix such as Javor's 1CD matrix should also be used. Again, test, test ,test & test. There is no perfect setting for every movies.

If the target is PS3 and your computer (encoder) is fast enough. I agree that x264 is also a good try.
