I'm going to give this one a bump. Anyone know if the upgrade to the Nero 9 (Recode 4.0.4.0) is going to be worth the while, and why?

normal people do not use nero crap! You have better apps here for free!

Thanks for the help.
Anyone else have any gems of advice?

You would do well to heed atak's advice. Nero is complete sh** compared to just about every encoding tool found on this forum.

Hi!normal people do not use nero crap!As the lyrics in one of the songs in "Porgy & Bess" go - "It ain't necessarily so" ;>}

"Normal" people use all kinds of software - for better or for worse...

Again - without getting into a "my encoder is better than your encoder" thread hijack...

Does anyone know the improvements (if any) made in the new release of Recode? (4.0.4.0 / Nero 9)

I agree with greggerm the forum is used to discuss encoding apps.
nero is one of them.

In this case I have to say this... Nero uses vfw codecs (and yes there is a vfw of x.264 but its never kept quite up to date with the exe)... Other GUIs here that don't cost money and are actively developed by the creators and supporters. Where as Nero has Customer Service (CS) PR crap going for it... Here you can talk directly with the developer and get strait forward answers to any concern support or difficulty operating the program...
Nero Has no such ability and never will. As for changes they never post a publicly viewable change log which is good practice here for all developers on the forum...

Not to play; as you put it the My Encoder is better then Yours! Piece the fact still remains you pay for what you get... (ie little if any support, no info on internally changing items, more loss of money for every new version and less feature friendly obstacles that seem to get in the way, and that lousy windows policy of activation treat all customers like criminals type attitude...)

No, No matter how you spell it After Nero 6 I stopped buying their products because they went cold. You know corporate cold...:p

As for your initial OP I think that it only can be answered by their not to friendly English none coherent CS staff...

This is my take on it... ~Ajax:readfaq:

I am acutely aware of the benefits and drawbacks of x264 as well as the homebrewed GUIs - I've used them! Unlike many enthusiasts though, I am less hung up on pixel-peeping and raw encoding efficiency as I am on ease of use, straightforward operation, and a stable platform. Given I usually purchase and upgrade Nero for it's disc burning tools, Recode is a nice added bonus.

Developers, by all means - keep up the good work. Your encoders and GUIs help to pressure commercial vendors such as Nero. But for my encoding needs, Recode is the only one that lets me get my jobs from stand alone MPEGs, AVIs, and DVDs of movies and television episodes all batched up and processed without spending an hour tweaking scripts, updating add-on components, and wasting time checking to see if my audio will mux in properly. Yes, I trade off a modicum of encoding quality and detailed options, but it is a trade off I gladly accept for a usually smooth experience.

I continue to watch the threads, posts, and developments of various tools out here, and occasionally I try one out to see if the developments help people like me. As of yet, none have - and when they do, rest assured I'll give them a fair shake. But until then, I go with what I know works... which is why I bumped this thread from obscurity back into action because I was interested in knowing other peoples experiences with the new build of Recode.

In fact, the only take I am really interested in are those from people who have used the new Recode and what it may, or may not, bring new to the table... but thank you all for evangelizing and generally transforming the thread from a simple question into a stump speech. It also doesn't reflect well on someone when they criticize a vendor for poor language skills, all the while demonstrating equally flawed grammar themselves. (eg: "As for your initial OP I think that it only can be answered by their not to friendly English none coherent CS staff...") They may not be native English speakers (and I assume you aren't either) but I can understand their English (Such as people like JohnV) better than I understood that last post, so take that for what it's worth.

Hopefully someone from Nero or a user who has actually tried it out can weigh in before it gets too late.

Say what you want but when it comes down to ease-of-use I think Nero is unbeatable. Their tools mostly do the right thing, are easy to use and do not look like they are a bunch of different tools glued together with a GUI.
So, my only problem with Nero's encoder: does it feature a quality-based preset now?

Their tools mostly do the right thingYet last time I tried their application still couldn't open Avisynth files (or, for that matter, a wide variety of video files), forcing me to convert all my videos to a HuffYUV intermediate in order to transcode them...

Fixing this would go a long way towards making Recode a practical GUI.

Yes haste has never been one of my strong points...:p

Just because you can nit pick my statement does not mean my point was not made. Nero is less of a product and more of a puddle quick sand. If you feel ripped off don't take it out on me, they have CS for that.:)

As for Nero Recode Unless you can get one of their tarded CS Staff to give you a changlog, I doubt you will get much feedback on that particular item.

Compared nero digital avc with x264 is unfair.Nero digital AVC is developed by Nero and Ateme, but it is a limited edition of Ateme's Codec. The max b-frame is 3,max reference frame is 4,no RDO,no Quantize Matrix,no Weighted prediction ,no Hierarchical B-frames... ...

Nero always release the changlog,ie:http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-release-notes.html?NeroSID=7f093893c0b87bf74e650b88769dc800
But the new Nero 9 didn't do that until now.

Yes I agree with you :) We should not compare free and more optimized x264 with that crap old implementation in nero recode package :) I really don't know why people pay for this *&^^%$

:)
But nero recode is so easy to use.
Ateme releases their third generation H.264 core engine several days ago.Maybe nero recode 4.0.4.0 includes this codec.

Personally, I like Nero Recode and I don't mind paying for it because it encourages development. The problem with MeGUI and similar free/open projects is a general lack of contribution to encourage development. So many people use open source software/projects without contributing to its development either monetarily or coding wise.

Right, so apart from the "recode sux!"-comments, does anybody have the changelog or a list of some things which are new?
I was hoping for a constant quality mode but can't find it in the trial...

I am sorry if I made an error in speech. I said change log not release notes...

A change log is comprehensive and gives technical details, release notes just give a wash of basics that do nothing but confuse...

Ease of use is no resion to charge out the butt for a half there project that still is buggy.

easy of use? if an app takes [insert some really long time here] to download and some really seriously [insert some really long time here] to install, then i'am easily tired before, without even starting to look at the GUI...

nero 5.x was cute i agree.

....How about answering the persons problem. Or if you don't know the answer, as it would appear. Don't post.

I'm sorry I can't help you OP, but I've noticed no difference between the latest Recode and the old version 3 in actual output or encoding speed.

The main change that was done in Recode 4 is the superresolution feature. Which can be used to upscale SD to HD content.
Additionally a lot of bugfixing was done from version 3 to 4.
