View Full Version : Where does Fair Use rank with other apps?

I was just wondering what some of you think about this, along with AutoGK, Handbrake, some of the other apps.
Where does Fair Use rank, obviously the full version. What are the pros and cons? Does it do a quality job? Thanks for your input

Anybody with an opinion would be appreciated, I would just like to know the overall feeling of this board toward this program, and the above statements

I like FUW for backing-up episodic discs to Xvid, e.g. TV series discs with multiple episodes. FUW allows you to easily see the episodes and separately encode them (with different settings if need be). It has a nice cropping feature, and an even nicer ability to adjust resolution & bitrate while looking at a Quality factor. I'd rank it right above AutoGK which is excellent and still valid for simple one movie backups. I'd call FUW a "beginner's tool" like AGK but has a few more (and more complicated) options.
I think "full FUW" is free now, if not if you can find Celtic_Druid's website (EDIT: looky here (http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/)) he has made a free build of FUW, since the original author used others' code for parts of it, he (I think) has to release the source and celtic_druid has made executables from it.
P.S. FUW is strictly a DVD-backup app. Doesn't work on files alone e.g. TV recordings you may have made yourself.

Yea but all you have to do it turn them into vob files and then make an iso, then you can.
Also Fair Use FULL you still have to pay for (or get by other means) its up to ver. 2.8
But compared to to AutoGK, which do you people (doom9) think does a better job?

Hi!Yea but all you have to do it turn them into vob files and then make an iso, then you can. That hardly seems worth the time and effort, especially when a plethora of other programs DON'T require DVD as input...

I agree w/setarip_old. Rather than bother with this, I use a different tool.

Yes OK I see he's charging for it again--was free for a while. Still, CD's is free, no strings attached.

You can find 1000s of posts debating this; I say "Xvid is Xvid" (Divx has always failed my tests) i.e. it's a tossup. I still use both tho I prefer (as I said) FUW for episodic discs. Along w/AGK I also use StaxRip.
BTW staxrip will make the more modern h264 files--which is what you oughta be looking at anyway (and MeGUI and ripbot264 and others).
EDIT: I see FUW has a x264 option also. Maybe someday I will try that!!!

Fair Use Wizard is a waste. Why on earth would you pay for a program that bundles the functionality offered by a dozen freeware or free software programs behind a dumbed-down GUI? The investment of time you make in learning to use the free tools - most of which, IMO, present more granular and intuitive GUI options - will pay off by leaving cash in your wallet as well as producing encodes that adhere to your specifications.

Umm Im not talking about the COST of it, im talking about the functionality and quality of results
Please next time read the previous posts first

The output will be exactly the same as it would be if using the applications it bundles, provided that the parameters you pass to each of them are the same. The only difference (after acclimating to the features of each GUI) is cost - except for the instances in which Fairuse Wizard hides more advanced options that are accessible from the GUI in other apps.

I just wonder why you guys don't make some very simple gui to do the work just like
dvd to h.264
the input is the VIDEO_TS folder of the dvd
and then choose the encoding mode Constant+number , Single Pass or Two Pass+bitrate
others setting is the same as original source(frame rate,Aspect ratio )
select sound encoding+bitrate
select container
(hide all the details but if you want you can go into it)
click start then wait to finish
I have tried many software but still not found the simple but have quality software.
the good thing of fariuse is maybe because it's just simple.

If ripbot264 is too complicated for you I give up!

The problem is obvious how simple is still decent enough & that the definition of simple varies between users (ideally each user would have it's own developer :P).

I switched to MediaCoder for my needs, BTW i never see anything simpler than FairUse for DVD > XviD tasks: it does not need even the ripper. The bad is that it don't support avi sources... ('cause it's focused on DVD backups, probably)
Last but not least is GPL.
I strongly suggest ffdshow users to adopt it (MPC+FFDshow+FUW), others goes with VLC/MC.

So whats the consensus on the job it does with DVD sources? Do it do a good job when compared to the others? Pros? Cons?

x264 support only via VfW is a BIG contra and enough reason to not use it nowadays when we have so many alternatives...

I remember myself using Fair Use Wizard to make xvids of my DVD's, now I use Staxrip, but I just remember that the quality FUW produced was fantastic, actually better than Staxrip.
Dunno why, but it was great, of course now I use other tools to convert to h264.

Assuming that FUW and Staxrip both use Xvid to create MPEG-4 ASP content, the quality cannot differ between those applications.
That's because the quality is limited by the encoder in use and by the selected bitrate, not by the front-end. And of course encoder settings can make a significant difference too.
So unless one of these front-ends uses crippled encoder settings or bizarre pre-filtering, the quality for the same source should be identical!
However x264/H.264 will deliver MUCH better quality than Xvid/ASP when using the same target bitrate (except for "overkill" bitrates where both look transparent).

Assuming that FUW and Staxrip both use Xvid to create MPEG-4 ASP content, the quality cannot differ between those applications. But, what Ramir may have encountered is that FUW automatically decides when & how to de-interlace, while IIRC staxrip requires the user to make this decision. But I agree (and said already) that "Xvid is Xvid" yet the OP continues to insist there must a "consensus" here. Ain't gonna happen.

No Im not insisting on a "consensus". Im just asking if you guys think this is a quality program that does a good job...I was interested in pros and cons of the program and just how it compares to others, sorry if you guys misconstrued what I was asking for and for it to become a flame fest for you hardcore encoders out there with the app that you will never leave. Just wanted thoughts and opinions on this app and that was all, just like if someone was asking what are the pros and cons of WinAVI lol

I already said: As far as I know FUW is limited to VfW Codecs, so there is no proper way to use x264.
That (in my opinion) makes the application useless, because x264 is one of the best encoders you can get today for your backups.
And the quality is limited by the encoder and the bitrate, not by the front-end application.
If you just are interested to use Xvid, things might look different, of course...

29th September 2008, 22:25
Yes, I mainly use Xvid because it works in standalones, Im not really interested in x264 unless it becomes more popular to play in standalones and becomes the new standard
But yes I do realize that x264 does give better results given if you are shooting for a smaller size
Nightshiver

Don't worry, it will become the new standard. XVID is already outclassed by it, and h264 is always gaining more popularity.

OK for all involved it is a good PAY PER CLICK application. but like everybody has said it is just a front end to the real Open source magic... I never saw any resin to purchase it because Doom9 offered too many great OSS tools that worked just as good if not better.
If you want to know a general response for your question this is the best I can give...
There is no definitive, all doing, all knowing, get'er done type app! IT IS A MYTH
Fairuse is a great solution if you don't mind having to deal with a super simple GUI that cost Thee All Mighty Dollar to have...

Just for the notes: You can download and use FUW for free. No idea if that is a "limited" edition though...
