View Full Version : Capping a TV show

Hey guys - I'm wondering how to cap a TV show. I'm able to copy it to DVD from my satellite box, then rip the VOBs to my PC - that's the easy part. I can also use Auto GK to encode a DivX/Xvid file. That's is all straight forward.

BUT, what I can't do is cut the ad breaks out and top & tail (i.e tidy up the start & ends) of the sequence. What software do people use for this? All capped TV shows have ad breaks cut out, so I assume it's easy enough & involves some sort of editing software. Auto GK works well for general use, but it encodes the full ISO title of the DVD, without any edit options, which isn't ideal unless it's a perfect DVD dub. I need to be able to cut out the ad breaks before rendering my final file.

Advice? Cheers!

There's an older app called Vidomi that works great as a lossless editor. Once you have the files on your PC, load them all into Vidomi, click Options > General options, select "Ignore settings and use MPEG copy code," then when you select a portion it's exported as an .mpg file. You'll have to set start and end points for each segment and export them separately, and name them in a fashion identical to your VOBs with the segments in sequential order. When you're done, opening the first one in AutoGK should load the rest automatically, and your encode will have all the trimmed segments.

Personally I use meGUI for transcoding, with that once you have created the avs script it has an editor to apply cuts. There are many options though, have a look in the GUI forum. You can also play around with VirtualDub and edit the avs script by hand,

ProjectX can make cuts when demuxing, but it can only start a cut on a key frame, but as it is the original file you can burn to a DVD and it will work without any transcoding. You should really be using something like ProjectX for demuxing anyway, since if you use DGindex it doesn't like errors, fine for DVDs, but for TV caps can cause sync issues.

Hi!

Another easy-to-use method would be to use AutoGK to create an unedited DivX/XviD compressed .AVI - and then edit with VirtualDub...

You can also try AviDemux, Cuttermaran, MPEG2Cut.

I wouldn't recommend to use "Vidomi" because they stole code from VirtualDub (http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/2041.cfm). Even though this happened a LONG time ago, i still don't like them for it.
