View Full Version : Leatherheads Protection

The R1 version of "Leatherheads", a Universal release contains what appears to be "usual" "XProtect" copy protection.
DVDFab HD Decrypter processed this standard DVD without difficulty...

Yes DVDFab did rip this one and it plays fine, but for some strange reason the movie shows as unreferenced in DVD Shrink.

According to the latest AnyDVD changelog it's a new protection so there must be some sort of difference between this and previous discs.

Strange (to me) that AnyDVD would need to be updated for the R1 version of this release.
I used DVD Fab HD Decrypter v.4.120, released back in April, to successfully process it.
Although I'm certainly no champion of Fengtao's products, you must give credit where credit is due. It appears that DVD fab HD Decrypter's "Pathplayer" technology is closer to true A.I. than the competing process used by AnyDVD...

I think this is an overstatement. Let's remember in this case we are discussing an individual movie. There have been other cases where AnyDVD hasn't required an update while DVDFab did. So in those cases was AnyDVD closer to true A.I.? That leads to a somewhat purposeless debate. :)

A quick look at the AnyDVD forum would show you: http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=20465.
6.4.7.0 2008 09 23
- New (DVD): Added support for new protections, e.g.:
"Leatherheads", US
- Some minor fixes and improvements

Hi!There have been other cases where AnyDVD hasn't required an update while DVDFab did.Although at my age, my memory is not perfect, I'm not aware of any such situations in the last 6 months or more. Do you have any specific standard DVD releases in mind?
Thanks for the link to the AnyDVD changelog...
**EDIT** The thread in your link to the changelog appears to indicate that it's still "less than perfect"

I cannot give you a specific example because I don't take the time to memorize them. I've long since given up fighting the early onset of senility. I'd say to check the DVDFab forums. There have been a number of times within the last 6 months where a problem was discussed. I'm not taking a jab at DVDFab just to put it down. I think it's fair to say that at times both products may get hung up on a specific disc and it sometimes may be different discs that do it.
Thanks for the link to the AnyDVD changelog...

As is DVDFab's solution "less than perfect".
Both products produce output where the main movie title is seen as unreferenced in DVD Shrink. You can produce a full-disc rip using the AnyDVD ripper that works. You can produce output from AnyDVD & CloneDVD that also works. DVDFab's output also works, as well, unless you use DVD Shrink as I previously mentioned. Both currently have a similar situation in reference to DVD Shrink. Apparently, if you run the output through DVD Rebuilder Pro it fixes something but I don't have this disc nor am I interested in the movie so I can't play around with it.
In short, people might not consider either solution 100% right now but if you don't use DVD Shrink then there shouldn't be a problem. Considering how many people absolutely worship DVD Shrink then I would say this constitutes a large group of people. I'm unsure how Recode sees this disc. I'm sure both parties will be trying to address the problem soon enough.

This is correct. After using DVD Rebuilder, the file structure appears correct and plays fine.
PgcEdit finds a lot of errors when examining the full disc rip.

Likewise, DVD2One properly compresses the output generated by DVDFab HD Decrypter...

You can't make these assumptions without knowing the process. Looks like I have to defend the AI scanner here, simply because you can't know it...
The AI scanner itself actually is very reliable - there have been no changes to it for many weeks now.
It's purpose is not to fix the disc, but to propose potential copy protected areas on the disc - and it does not miss even one of them.
But just like Rip... uh, I mean pathplayer :o it sometimes can misjudge an easter egg for a protection.
That is simply owed to time restrictions: AnyDVD is not a ripper, so it has only roughly 10 seconds time to do the whole processing before the user expects his cleaned and deprotected disc to appear ready. If it takes longer, he opens a SlySoft support ticket.
If the AI scanner was granted more time (apx 2-15 minutes), it would be 100% accurate - my guess is, that is something pathplayer wouldn't achieve, but that is only guessing.
So AnyDVD has an additional "intelligence" that determines, what to cut and what to leave (save those poor little easter eggies). Especially some areas that have never been touched by copy protections until now, were masked out by this filter.
Since copy protectors are having a really hard time to defeat the AI scanner, they are resorting to desperate measures.
The AI scanner detected the leatherheads protection just fine but the filter prevented the correction.
So the AI scanner simply has a longer leash now to fix this :)
That's all.

Very interesting and definitive information as usual Peer.
It's great to see how proactive you guys are too.

I know you are joking Peer, but the implication is that the RipIt4Me technology has been handed over to fengtao. I can assure you (and everyone else) that this is not the case.

Hi!The AI scanner detected the leatherheads protection just fine but the filter prevented the correction. The distinction that you are making between the behavior of the "scanner" and the behavior of the "filter" are transparent to the user, aren't they? If so, wouldn't it be the case that the user would only be aware that AnyDVD didn't properly/completely deal with the DVD?

I want to know about AIscanner's "detect" or "filter" or "correction", too.
I've thoght strange and wanted to know why is it like http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=140561 ?

Thank you Peer, very informative.
By granting the AI scanner more time, I assume you're meaning a full disk scan as apposed to just the suspect areas.
If this is the case, could the option to do a full disk scan be implemented into AnyDVD, for those occasions that warrant it?

Please do not continue to delete this thread because you think it now off topic. That is not for you to decide. I believe it has sufficient interesting information in it, especially the stuff from Peer, to make it worthwhile.

Currently there is no disc known that would benefit from this.
As soon as one shows up, rest assured, AnyDVD will be updated to handle it.
Protectors are not concentrating on this kind of protection anyway. They seem to favor messing up the file system instead.

He will answer them if he wishes toAn obvious option available to all of us.
However, common courtesy dictates responding to a question asked of you, even if only to say, "I'd prefer not to answer your question" or, "I'm afraid I can't answer your question because..." - especially when one of the questions was posed by the threadstarter...

Hi,
I tried ripping Season 2 of the Office (Australian Release) and disc 4 would only work with AnyDVD, I tried the Fengtao alternative and a few others but it was only when I installed an old (downloaded mid 2008) version of AnyDVD that it worked. The rest would rip and burn but all the menus etc were all messed up. It was especially strange since discs 1-3 were rippable with DVD Decrypter!! Only disc 4 had the serious protection.
