View Full Version : DVD and DivX playback not working in WinXP

I recently installed XP and I can't view any dvd or divx movies. The audio is there but no video. I can't decide if there's a problem with my video card, my dvd player, xp itself, or maybe even the dvd decoder card is interferring. I also have a Voodoo2 card installed. Any suggestions how to fix this? I looked at support on MS.com but no luck.

to install DivX 4 & 3 codecs? Or tried to install a software DVD player?

Yes I have DivX 4 installed. I figured something out since I posted my problem. I can't play DivX 3.11 files with the DivX 4 codec under XP. So now I can play DivX 4 movies but still no DVD. I have two software DVD players. One is the Windows Media Player for XP and the other is Interactual Player. Neither one displays the video from a DVD, just audio. I NEED HELP!!!

I'm not familiar with Interactual player, but i know WMP needs to have an ASPI layer installed. I know PowerDVD installs one...

OK...Power DVD does work for me but no audio with the trial version. How do I install an ASPI layer in Media Player?

mike97gt-although the original plan was for WMP 8 to play DVDs, they changed their mind at the last minute, and you have to pay extra to get it to work as a DVD player.

ASPI layer-go to Doom9s Download-Utilities section and find Force ASPI and install it. XP doesn't come with one installed.

If I were you, I'd uninstall DivX 4, and then install the DivX 3.11 codec, and then reinstall the DivX 4 codec, and answer No when it asks you if you want it to play your DivX 3.11 movies.

Power DVD 4.0 works fine for DVDs (I can't remember if there was an XP patch-I don't think so).

Sweet! Thanks manono. I'll do that. By the way I tried to install DivX 3.11 and 4 at the same time and I had problems playing one or the other. Seems like I can only have one installed at a time. I can play some DivX 3 encoded movies using the DivX 4 codec but not all of them. XP has not been very nice to me :(

Ok I got it to work but it wasn't the ForceASPI download. It was the one right next to it, Fraunhofer's dvd video and audio codecs. So now I think my problems have been solved, all except for installing both DivX 3 and 4 at the same time. Thanks for everyone's help.
