Hey all!

I have a movie in an MKV container. The video is h264, and the audio AC3. It is an HD rip. I want to essentially re-encode it to HRHD specs with the AC3 audio. I playback on an xbox media center which just can't handle HD, but HRHD is perfect.

For the life of me though I can't seem to figure out how to do this and every app I download and try just doesn't seem able to even READ the MKV file properly.

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe i'm missing the right codec to even decode this thing, in which case if someone could tell me what I need that would be awesome.

According to mkvinfo the video is:
(MKVInfo) | + Codec ID: V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC at 4339
(MKVInfo) | + Codec decode all: 1 at 4356
(MKVInfo) | + CodecPrivate, length 39 at 4359

And the audio:
(MKVInfo) | + Codec ID: A_AC3 at 4481
(MKVInfo) | + Codec decode all: 1 at 4488

Why did you make the MKV in the first place? Re-encode from your original DVD.

If you did not make it, where did you get it?

We ripped them this way to begin with because we had different hardware for playback. Hardware that has now died and won't be replaced any time soon because of money issues.

Ripping them in the first place though was such a pain in the behind, that I was hoping to avoid doing all these DVDs over again. Not to mention the sheer number of them and the time it took the first time. I thought it would be much easier and quicker to just convert them. Quality loss from re-encoding shouldn't be an issue due to the downsampling.

But if re-ripping them is the only way to do it then I guess I have no choice. It just will suck :(

We ripped them...

Scene group?

You're not making any sense. It will be just as hard to re-encode from the MKV as from the DVD. And you say you encoded them but you don't know what you need to decode it?

This has the strong smell of rule 6 so I am closing the thread. Send me a PM if you want to clarify matters.
