I don't know how to get rid of pixelated edges. Sometimes there is also weird colored artifacts around them.

Sample: [link removed, not enough webspace]

My goal is to compress each episode with x264. Bitrate budget for each episode is around 800-900 kbps without audio. Any recommendations what filters should be used to "clean" the video? Should I crop it a bit to 704x576 because it has some vertical black bars?

I'm using MeGUI for encoder settings and thought that DXVA-SD Anime Toons HQ profile would be good. It suppose to ensure compatibility with H.264 stand-alone hardware players? MKV container is also safe for that purpose?

If you are using Me-GUI auto-crop should remove the black borders for you. I can't comment on DXVA-SD Anime Toons HQ profile as I have had no use or experience with it.

Here are a few good links for filters. Neurons msharpen http://neuron2.net/msharpen/msharpen.htmland http://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english/externalplugins.htmand http://web.missouri.edu/~kes25c/, the avisynth homepage which has a wealth of information http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page and warspharp filter collection http://avisynth.org/warpenterprises/.

If you want to give an example of errors or results could you attached a frame of your video rather than the whole clip. Not sure about anyone else but 23mb download is a bit big for me.

Hope the above helps.

I had to remove the video clip so there is enough space for some pictures. Stupid 25 MiB limitation. :(

Uploaded some frames from the source:
