Putting a harddrive in your dvd player?

Maybe this is a complete long shot, but does anyone know what would happen if you took an ide harddrive and put a dvd on it, with the VIDEO_TS folder and the dvd content and nothing else and connected in place of the dvd drive on the player (assuming it is a ide dvd drive). Is it possible that it would see the video_ts file on root dir and play the movie?

Thats not what i meant, i'm asking what would happen if you replaced a an ide dvd-rom with a hard drive in a stand alone unit assuming it had an ide interface (like the apex 600a for instance)with a VIDEO_TS folder in my root dir. Would it work, do nothing, fry the whole thing, etc.... Thats what i am asking. I was about to try it but I thought I'd ask first, cuase i dont really have the money to replace my dvd player if it breaks (damn college tution).

Normally this will probably not work. But if you have an Apex-600 you can use the Sampo 631cf firmware to enable connecting an HDD to it + lots of other cool features. But you lose remote control capability and analog audio playback.

I tried it on my Hiteker/Apex-660 to enable mini-DVD capability and it worked! But I didn't try the HDD option.

Some people make a 'dual boot' firmware cd, so they can switch between firmware versions just by inserting it into the drive.
