I just got this DVD (region 1, first of a 4-disc set) and tried to play it in mplayer on Xubuntu. The results:
Start mplayer.
Let disc spin for about 5 minutes while nothing happens.
Give up, try playing in Totem, which freezes.
Start mplayer again, this time on chapter 2.
Message "MPEG-PS file format detected" appears in console after about 30 seconds of disc activity.
Disc spins for 10 minutes while nothing happens.
One-second "present by Pioneer" clip plays.
mplayer starts chapter 3, which takes another 10 minutes.
One-second completely blank clip plays.
mplayer starts chapter 4, which only takes about 3 minutes.
Black screen with some corrupted garbage shows for about a minute, then "CRC check failed" is printed and clip ends.
mplayer starts chapter 5, which takes another 5 minutes.
Half-second of audio plays.
Wait for a minute at another black/corrupted screen.
Half-second of extremely loud corrupted audio, few seconds of silence, repeat a few times. Looks like the first 100 pixels or so of the image appear before turning into corrupted garbage.
I give up, clean the disc, try again, of course nothing changes.mplayer has normal-looking output:$ mplayer dvd:///2
