I have some very old B&W 405 line sources on DVD that play but obviously flicker and are terrible quality and I am looking to try to improve things

Any suggestions appreciated

No, there isn't a better source thats why they are 405 line as thats all that exists

Steptoe and Son and Hancocks Half Hour mainly due to the BBC destroying/reusing the tapes again due to the very high cost at the time. A lot of old program were deleted this way, so 405 line i sall that is left and these are personal recordings made by people at the time or 'illegally' keeping copies of program of that era

The originals were 405-line video tapes.

What survives are telerecordings (the Americans call them kinescopes) - films made by pointing a film camera at a television monitor...

...and in some cases, early home video recordings. The worst quality steptoe one I've seen is a "modern" 625-line video recording made by pointing a camcorder at the screen of a 405-line TV while an old 405-line home video was played back. The old tape wouldn't play again, so that's the only copy that survives.
