Replace Movie credits

I have a need to remove all but the main movie of a disc and keep only relevant parts of the menu set. I also leave out any unwanted audio and sub-picture streams by not selecting them when compressing in DVDshrink.

Moreover, I wished to modify the credits cell(s) to save space, minimize the amount of compression and allow me to add a personal touch. To do this I use PGCedit and VobBlanker, thanks to the insight I have gained in this forum.

So, for those wishing to do a simlar thing, I offer my conclusion to the experiments I have just done.

I examined 5 different approaches, including one with PGCdemux and one that avoided the complication of having all audio streams present by first stripping the unwanted streams in VobBlanker. In the end the following scheme gave the most reliable outcome, most efficiently and with excellent video quality.

1. Extract the cell (all streams) with VobBlanker to VOB
2. Convert the VOB to AVI in Kate’s Toolkit or Video Converter
3. Demux all audio streams from the VOB in DGIndex
4. Convert the desired AC3 audio stream to WAV in Super. (The audio level will be much the same as the original VOB!)
5. Import the AVI (video) and WAV to Premiere to customize and output to M2V and WAV
6. Convert the WAV to AC3 in Super.
7. Then: mux to a 1-cell VOB the M2V and WAV in Muxman.
8. Replace the original cell in VobBlanker with this VOB.

That's it!
I know it looks involved, but it is quite quick.

As I think I mentioned before in another thread, there is aboslutely no need for all those conversions (which, unless lossless, will degrade quality).

First a correction: in my first post, step 7 should read: mux to a 1-cell VOB the M2V and AC3 in Muxman.

Yes, Les, you had mentioned editing the M2V and AC3 streams in Womble ... DVD, which saves a few steps. I tried this App but did not like it, and it is not able to do some of the things I do in Adobe Premiere. Moreover, 'Extract' in VobBlanker is easier than PGCdemux because in the latter it is not as obvious which is the required cell (I have one DVD where cell 7 apeared as cell 9, because of two extra cells it listed at the start!).

You also mentioned quality. I have compared the results on a large plasma screen with the original material and was not able to spot any significant loss in video quality! To maintain quality I use the Panasonic DV video Codec in Kate's Toolkit.

My post merely offers a method to any one else that wishes to work with an NLE package like Premiere, which will not accept AC3 and prefers DV-AVI to M2V.

NP Robin. What you might also wanna investigate is cuttermaran (http://www.cuttermaran.de/site/291/default.aspx) for cutting m2vs or any of the plethora of good audio editors for ac3 editing. As you can see, my personal preference is not to convert things but cut where I like.

Anyway, each to his own mate. :)
