View Full Version : Flickering on scene changes with some animes

I've noticed with some (older?) animes that there is the presence of an annoying flicker on many scene changes. When viewed frame-by-frame, it appears to consist of 3 particular frames: the first frame having a black strip across the bottom with a burnt look to it (but sometimes the strip has a piece of the next frame in it), the second frame having a thin distortion across the top (somewhat like that of a folded photograph), and the third being that the entire image appears slightly distorted or blurred. For example, I've seen this in Pokemon and Street Fighter II V.

What's the story behind this? Does anyone know? Also, for the purpose of encoding, is there any way to eliminate or lessen this unsightly flicker?

Below are two examples from the first episode of Pokemon. The frames of interest are the middle three. Notice how this phenomenon occurs just before and after a scene change.

This sounds like something you might have to fix manually, unfortunately... meaning combining the two "good" parts of the frame and using that combination to fix all three... and triggering it by hand.

I agree with Dark Shikari. In screenshots it seems that some of the frames, even though they have glitches, are identical. You may want to take a look at an internal filter of avisynth: freezeframe. (http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/FreezeFrame)
